Summary: The Difference
Review: I, having played golf for 3 1/2 years and working dilligently on my game had gotten my handicap into single digits. I was always inconsistent, never really being able to piece together a string of good rounds. I would hit balls at the driving range, my backyard, and work on my swing any spare second that I had.

I have read 2 golf books in my life, Manuel de la Torre's Understanding the Golf Swing, which brought about marked improvement in my game and now John Novosel's Tour Tempo. This was the missing ingredient that tied everything else together. I was shocked and amazed, I could not believe I was hitting the ball that crisply. I got this book in Mid-January, and since I am a basketball coach, I had not played golf since Christmas break, after working with Tour Tempo for about 5 weeks, I played a round of golf in February and shot 79. This was amazing to me, becuase normally to get to that level, I would have had to play and practice everyday and "peak out" at that level in the summer.

Needless to say, Tour Tempo helped me tie all of the other swing mechanics together. I believe this book will help everyone who struggles with consistency, because using the Tour Tempo tracks makes you practice consistently.

Summary: Novosel has a "Tiger" by the tail
Review: John Novosel (with John Garrity) is truly on to something here. Plainly put, this is simply the very first truly innovative tome about the golf swing in over 50 years. Prepare to experience a wonderful "a-ha!" moment when you read this book and especially when you watch/listen to the accompanying dvd/cd. You will find yourself buying a disc-man to take with you to the driving range! Finally, a golf instruction book that gets results!!!

Summary: Golf's Timeless Fundamental Confirmed!
Review: Kudos to John Novosel and John Garrity for providing golfers with empirical proof of the ideas first expressed by Ernest Jones in "Swinging Into Golf" (Robert M. Mc Bride & Company, 1946) and later refined by C.A. Macey in "Golf Through Rhythm" (C.A. Macey, Crowborough Golf Club, 1957), Robert Winthrop Adams in "Timing Your Golf Swing" (The Citadel Press, 1957) and me in "Golf's Timeless Fundamental" (ICS Books, 1997). In "Tour Tempo" Novosel and Garrity have confirmed my proposition that there is but one "Golf Swing Rhythm" for every club and every swing. Their research also confirms that unlike the "Golf Swing Rhythm", which is universal, "Golf Swing Tempo" varies from person to person based upon size and build.

Unfortunately, like many without a musical background, Novosel and Garrity confuse the terms "tempo" and "rhythm", using them interchangeably when in fact they have two very separate and distinct meanings. Tempo refers to the overall speed of the swing or how long it takes to go from the swing's start to finish. Rhythm, on the other hand, refers to how the total time of the swing is apportioned among the various parts of the swing. Thus, Novosel and Garrity would have been more accurate if they had titled their book "Tour Rhythm" or "Tour Tempos" instead of "Tour Tempo". After all, as their book suggests, there is only one rhythm whereas there are many tempos.

I would have also liked them to explain the concepts of tempo and rhythm in the context of the full swing and not just the backswing and downswing through impact. Again, this would make their work more complete, accurate and easier to understand.

That said, I highly recommend "Tour Tempo" and commend Novosel and Garrity for making a significant contribution to the body of work in this area of golf.

Summary: Great concept, but...
Review: Ok, this is the book in a nutshell: swing faster and in a 3-to-1 ratio of backswing to downswing. Bear in mind, this guy is not a golf instructor, a point which becomes painfully obvious when he says things like "don't start your downswing with a radical forward movement of the right knee." Gee, there's good advice if I ever heard it. If you're doing that, Tour Tempo - or any tempo - ain't gonna help you.

Getting back to this book: the main problem is that after telling you to swing a lot faster, he doesn't say anything about HOW to swing faster. Lucky for me, I read Ben Hogan's "5 Lessons, the Modern Fundamentals of Golf" the day before I read this. After reading Hogan's book, the flaws of basically all other golf books is revealed.

The difference? Hogan can (and does) tell you WHY pro's swing faster than we do: they start their downswing with their left hip, not their hands.

Get Hogan's book, learn the SEQUENCE of the swing (which he makes so incredibly simple to understand), and then try starting your downswing with an aggressive clearing out, clockwise, of the left hip. End of story.

Summary: A Much Needed Contribution to Golf Instruction
Review: The subtitle of this book is "Golf's Last Secret Finally Revealed". There couldn't be a better decription of this book. I have for many years carried a 20 handicap. During the summer of '03, I made a major commitment to rebuilding my golf swing. This consisted of twelve lessons and loads of practice. I learned how to grip the club properly, how to set-up, how to take the club back, and how to swing through the ball. Like many players rebuilding their swing, my scores got worse initially before getting better. However, even after the changes settled in there was no net gain in my index. I could now hit my best shots really, really well, but I still hit enough bad shots in a round to cancel the really good ones. What was happening was that while I was better mechanically, I was playing with way too many swing thoughts. I was not enjoying playing because I was playing in fear of making a mistake, of not remembering something in a long list of swing thoughts.

A playing partner recommended Tour Tempo to me a couple of months ago. After adopting the lessons of Tour Tempo, results were almost immediate. Lower scores (index down to 16.8), and more fun from playing golf. Now the only thing in my mind when I step up to the ball is the target and a cadence. In fact, I believe my improvement has resulted from both my work on mechanics and tempo. I was unable to benefit from the mechanics alone, however, because the successful golf swing , it seems,is more than just the sum of the parts; it is how everything works together in time. Buy this book.

Summary: Golf's "holy grail" has been discovered!
Review: This book contains the answer to all of the questions about golf. It explains why people have such a difficult time playing the game consistently. It shows you what the professionals really do differently than amateurs.

The book provides a training aid that will produce dramatic improvement in clubhead speed, accuracy and consistency.

The amazing thing is that the answer is quite simple. The training aid is easy to use and results are immediate.

This is a remarkable discovery by John Novosal.

Summary: Tour Tempo is highly informative
Review: This book showed how tempo equated to increases in clubhead speed. It does make sense to go back much slower in the backswing than in the downswing to increase clubhead speed. I also used the following to help improve my game immensely. This book is called:
The Ultimate Golf Instruction Guide: Key Techniques for Becoming a Zero Handicap Golfer or Better by Patrick Leonardi
(ISBN is 1933023090)
Patrick Leonardi's book is unlike any other golf book or golf magazine I used on golf instruction. It actually helped me to go from a 89.2 scoring average to a 84.1 scoring average in about 2 months. The thing is the more I practice using Leonardi's techniques the more I improve. I can't say this for other golf instruction books. I was recommended this book from one of my golfing buddies who improved a lot from using Leonardi's book. Anyway, Tour Tempo by John Novosel is an interesting book on the science of timing in the golf swing.

Summary: Tour Tempo: Golf's Last Secret Finally Revealed
Review: Tour Tempo - It Works! I got the Tour Tempo book less than two weeks ago just out of curiosity. I've read the book twice, I've viewed the DVD for a short while, and I have listened to the CD repeatedly in my car.

I have played since I was a kid, but not being a natural golfer, I have been burdened with too many swing thoughts. The best I have ever been is a 16 handicap; in the last two years playing once a week I have not broken 90. I do not belong to a club so I don't have easy access to a practice range; I sometimes swing a club in the yard. I have only played 9 holes 4 times this season. Yesterday I played in an outing at Little Mountain in Concord, Ohio. It has a reputation for being a difficult course.

In preparation for this round I listened to the Tour Tempo CD in my car on the way to the golf course. I arbitrarily picked the 24/8 tempo (27/9 sounded too slow & 21/7 seemed like it might be too fast). I alternated between track 5 (3 tones) and track 6 "Swing, Set, Through".

There is no driving range at this course, so a few swings on the first tee had to suffice.
On the course, before each shot, I took two practice swings silently saying "Swing, Set, Through" in my head.

I missed only two fairways, shot a 40-43-83 but more importantly, my biggest swing flaw was entirely eliminated. I have had a tendency to not finish my swing. With Tour Tempo, I found myself accelerating through the ball with the club swinging to finish naturally. My bad swings, which were few, were not bad swings at all, but alignment errors. Even my few mis-hits had decidedly better results.

I always knew tempo was important, but no one was ever able to tell me what good tempo is. You have not only solved the mystery, but made great tempo almost instantly accessible. I am obviously looking forward to even greater improvement. Thanks!

Summary: Part of the package
Review: Tour Tempo was a real eye opener. Following the drills, my clubhead speed and accuracy were greatly increasedt. The whole premise of the book is that golf amatuers take the club back way too slow. Taking the club back too slow allows faults to creep in (paralyzed by analysis). With the tour tempo, you swing the club back fast and even faster on the follow through in a 3:1 ratio. Getting into a good tempo, really allows you to swing more free.

The book says that even beginners will benefit. They probably will, but I think you really need solid fundimentals before really getting something out of this book. This book will really help the mid-handicapper who already knows what the swing is supposed to look like- it will teach you how to swing.
