Rating: Summary: Something that did not exist before in this world Review: "I wrote this book because I felt I could bring something into existence that did not exist before in this world", wrote Mr. Tedeschi in his preface. That is the truth. If you take this book in your hands and read a few pages of it, you will realize that, with the exception of his other book about Taekwondo, there is no equal. You can't compare these books with anything else. The greateness of this book is unbelievable. It is complete, it is clear, it is honest, it is modern. You have to take a look at it to believe. Take a look at his web site and you will understand what I am talking about...
Rating: Summary: PRAISE FOR "HAPKIDO" Review: "This book is in my experience the most comprehensive ever written on a single martial art. It is superbly organized, highly informative, and contains thousands of outstanding photographs. An authoritative presentation of basic principles and techniques, integrated with modern innovations, makes this work indispensable to martial artists of virtually any style." - PROFESSOR WALLY JAY"Hapkido is an overwhelming achievement. Its comprehensiveness and the quality of the writing and design are unmatched in martial arts literature. The author's integration of history, philosophy, and technique into the larger framework of martial arts as a whole makes this book invaluable to any martial artist. Tedeschi's treatment of weapons techniques is honest, practical, and well worth studying." - NICKLAUS SUINO, author of "The Art of Japanese Swordsmanship" This ground-breaking work is the first to comprehensively document the traditions, philosophy, and techniques of one of the world's most varied, exciting, and practical martial arts-Hapkido. More than 9000 photographs introduce over 2000 martial techniques, including strikes, kicks, blocks, avoiding movements, holds, joint locks, chokes, throws, falls, tumbling, ground fighting, and weapons. Numerous closeups show precise grips, leverage methods, pressure points, hitting surfaces, and direction of force. In addition to self-defense techniques, chapters are included on East Asian philosophy, martial arts history, anatomy, meditation, healing, and pressure point fighting, as well as in-depth, previously unpublished interviews with the world's preeminent Hapkido Grandmasters and renowned Grandmasters of related martial arts. Because of similarities between Hapkido and many other martial arts, including Taekwondo, Jujutsu, Aikido, Judo, and Tai Chi Chuan, this book is a useful reference for practitioners of all martial arts styles, from novices to masters. This unique work of exceptional quality is the definitive text on Hapkido, and destined to become a classic of martial arts literature. MARC TEDESCHI is an internationally respected artist, designer, and educator, who holds a fifth-degree black belt in Hapkido, a martial art that integrates both healing and combative techniques. He has practiced martial arts for more than twenty-five years, training extensively in Hapkido, Taekwondo, Jujutsu, Judo, and Karate. Long a student of Eastern concepts of human physiology and integrated medicine, he is the author of "Essential Anatomy for Healing and Martial Arts."
Rating: Summary: The best Hapkido book I've ever seen Review: After many years in hapkido training, this is the best reference material I've ever seen and I have them all (including the Korean texts). Make no mistake, this hapkido DOES work on the street and it's just like I was taught in Korea. It's saved my life more than once. This book is a must have for any serious hapkido student.
Rating: Summary: Tedeschi's Hapkido Textbook Review: As a Hapkido Master, I am pleased to recommend this book to anyone who is serious about Hapkido. Master Tedeschi has done a wonderful job of exposing this art to the public, without "selling out". He has presented many facets of the same truth, and I firmly believe this will become a classic text. Master Frank Clay National Hapkido Association www.nhahapkido.com www.haemukwan.com
Rating: Summary: BEST HAPKIDO BOOK Review: As a martial artist of over 30 years and a 7th Dan in Hapkido, I own this book and find it to be the most comprehensive text on this beautiful Korean art. Marc Tedeschi presents the material in such a way as to not be biased toward any one belief on the true history of Hapkido, leaving out political views. He gives equal credit to many of the top Korean Hapkido masters. He does give credit to some of his non-Hapkido instructors, which is only a sign of respect to his teachers. The entire book is of excellent quality: professional cover, high quality photographs of excellent techniques, and an immense amount of information. This is the finest Hapkido book I have had the pleasure to own, and I like to think that if Choi, Yong Sool were alive today, he would be honored.

Rating: Summary: E for Effort, D for content Review: Excellent design and photos, indeed much work went into this book. Many of the techniques are a joke. Missing chapters on one of the most famous and respected Grandmaster's, the Late Myong Jae Nam (Jae Nam Myong) and his VERY important style of Hapkido which is simply not acceptable. Lack of cicular techniques. Poor research.
Rating: Summary: Not only for Hapkido students excellent for Jiu jitsu too! Review: Hapkido was created by a Korean who was trained by a Jiu Jitsu master in japan for about 30 years. If you do Jujutsu/Jiujitsu (Standup styled Japanese Jiu Jitsu not BJJ) this book is excellent for you too Hapkido has all the same moves of Jiu jitsu and its all documented here. A great book for any Hapkido Student or Japanese Jujutsu student Note for a BJJ (Gracie or Brazilian Jiu jitsu student get Marc's (Same author) the art of ground fighting principles and techniques.
Rating: Summary: My 9th Dan Master is in the book Review: I am training under a 9th dan Korean Grandmaster who was a student of the founder of Hapkido's premiere student. He is interviewed in Marc's book, which on the face of it raises the credibility of the book to a quite high level. It is best to take the negative reviews with a grain of salt.
Rating: Summary: Most in - depth, comprehensive Hapkido book around!!!! Review: I can't improve on all the positive accolades written so eloquently about this book. I agree it's a major comprehensive and excellent work on Hapkido. I recommend this book and Dr. He Young Kimm's Hapkido book and you'll pretty well have the majority of Hapkido covered.
Some of the distractors make a few good objections, however, there are no perfect books. This one's fairly good attempt. Yes, there is much also applicable to Jujitsu and other martial arts as well. That should not be a liablity, however, shows the thoroughness of an eclectic style like Hapkido.
The only objection I have the book is so large and heavy that it is unwielding and hard to read. Maybe a 2 Volume set would be better. A good buy nevertheless.
