Summary: very informative
Review: i recomend this book to anyone interesting in learning about kendo. although a little over priced great as reference.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Very good, however...
Review: I was a kendoka for four months when I read this book, and I should say that it helped me a lot, and it still helps me, especially the descriptions of the waza (techniques) are invaluable. However, when I look back to the times I started practicing Kendo, I remember that I lacked the etiquette and the conduct of behaviour that was required in the dojo. I learned those by experience, and I believe that I could have educated myself if this book had contained those topics. I believe that Ozawa Sensei didn't feel the need to explain these, since these are common to Japanese culture. A second aspect that I may criticize is the "warm-up exercises" section. For me, warming up is not an important aspect which has to be thought in Kendo, since it is also a budo and what I learned from my teacher is that budo means "acting immediately". Finally, I do recommend the book to every kendoka, whether beginner or experienced.

Summary: Almost Definitive
Review: It's an excelent book. It's a little like a "This is kendo" of the 90's. The general layout is very sober, as it should be. I just wish it had more pictures. It's OK, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it definitive.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Admirably comprehensive, up-to-date guide
Review: Ozawa-sensei has produced a very useful reference for both beginner and experienced kenshi. Of the several books on kendo I own, this is the one I refer to most because of the breadth of its concise descriptions, clear illustrations, Japanese terminology and reference information. I highly recommend this book to compliment the learning gained in the dojo.

Summary: A Definitive Attitude.
Review: Sensei Ozawa provides a glimps into the inner art of kendo. Previous books until now didn't provide non-Japanese exponents a written source in such areas as etiquette, procedures and, techniques in the pursuit of kendo. Now sensei Ozawa provides readers a "door" into the mysterious Japanese art of kendo. I've been doing kendo for ten years in Japan. This book helped me realize some of the basic prinicples of the art. I feel that this is the most informative literature for anyone who is interested in the study of kendo.

Summary: Must-have for beginners and up
Review: The book includes history, training philosophy, instructions for equipment, basic footwork and strikes, techniques, kata and even tournament regulations. It has almost everything you would need to know about.

I have to work a little to find the information I need, as (of course) Ozawa organizes information differently from the way it's presented to students in the school that I attend. But it's all there, if you know what you're looking for. It's unfortunate that there isn't any information on shinai or armor maintenance.

This book is an excellent guide throughout your Kendo training.

Summary: More than just technique...
Review: The path of the sword is not taken lightly. It involves practice, improvment and confidence in the technique. This book is a good way to get you started. It covers basic techniques, ettiquette, terms and some very good advice. I would recommend this book along with "Iai, the art of drawing the sword" by Darrel Craig as these books compliment each other very well.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: The way of Kendo explained in simple English.
Review: This book will help guide the beginning kendoist with basic instructions on proper etiquete in and around the dojo. Direction on the downing and removal of the armour. Readers will learn proper techniques as well as all the Katas for testing. A must for all serious kendo enthusiast.
