Rating: Summary: One of the best instructional books ever written Review: Dennis did a great job on this one. This one is perfect for a beginner, novice, or so-called "expert". He explains the 42 terms perfectly assuming nothing. I recommend this to anyone who wants to learn a great new game. My hat's off to you, Dennis.

Rating: Summary: Learn the fun, challenging domino game of a lifetime. Review: There are two types of people in Texas - those who play 42 and those who need to learn. "Winning 42" was written for both groups of people. For those folks who are already familiar with the game, the most attractive parts of the book will be the advanced strategy section and the history section. The game of 42 does have a wonderful, uniquely Texan, history with which many players are unfamiliar. Knowing how the game was invented 110 years ago and passed down from generation to generation throughout Texas will deepen a likely already-strong bond to 42. You'll also find out about the annual Texas 42 championship tournament and read the stories of many 42 veterans - and how they learned the game in the early 1900s. I invite all 42 players around the state to contact me with information about local 42 clubs and tournaments, and also with wonderful family stories relating to your personal history and bond with 42. I will e-mail my 42 questionnaire to anyone interested in telling their family story. You may get a phone call from me, and you may find your information/story in the next printing of Winning 42. The book is selling fast and a second printing is not too far around the corner.
For folks who want to learn 42 from scratch, this book will do it for you. From the intricacies of bidding your hand or setting your opponent, to the challenge of the exciting "84" hand, you will learn all the fundamentals of this great team domino game. You can proceed to the advanced strategy chapter at your own pace.
42 is not a game mostly played with luck or memory, such as many other card or domino games. Skill and strategy definitely separate the best players from the casual ones. So it is truly fun and challenging, and you will never get tired of playing it. People of all ages love those aspects of the game. 42 players love to talk about their marathon sessions that last for hours. They'll tell you that however much they are able to play 42, it still isn't enough. They just can't get enough of the game.Wouldn't you love to learn a game like that?!
To borrow a relevant line, with full credit to its author - the late, great Harvey Penick, if you read my book, you are my pupil; if you play 42, you are my friend.
Rating: Summary: A must read introduction to "42" for any non-Texan novice Review: When I moved to Texas two years ago, many of my new friends played an unfamiliar game of "42". I hesitated joining their parties since "42" meant nothing to me. Then I found Dennis Roberson's book, "Winning 42". After reading cover to cover my confidence built and I am now part of the party and looking forward to the next session. The book does contain a few 'typos', but they force you to think and reflect on the game. If you want to learn "42" and its history, this is a MUST READ. book.
