Summary: Almost a winner!
Review: From a guy like myself who will never gamble beyond the paltry allowance I allow myself to loose per day - I have always wondered what it would be like to experience Vegas as a high roller or "whale."24/7 gives the reader a chance at this, following the "nice guy" author with $50,000 through Vegas - he takes us not only to the best hotels but also the local areas and clubs. Quite the tour. Along the way you experiene with the author the ability to get "drunk" with the gambling, trying to recoup the lossed until you realize you've been up all night! I'm glad to experience this through Mr. Martinez instead of with my own cash! The only downfall for me was the book lost steam near the end as the author looked for an ending.

Review: I thoroughly enjoyed the author's humor and approach to the ordeal. There's no gambling method or system here. Just wonderful stories and situations that make Vegas what it is. As a frequent player in Vegas, part of the enjoyment was seeing myself in so many of the author's situations.

Summary: Right on the money
Review: I thought I would never find a book on Las Vegas that captures the true feelings of anyone who loves this town. the writer is the first person who has been able to explain baccarat, and that shows a great insight into anyone who has stared lustly across the velvet ropes to see how the rich and famous play. It would be great to see him go back and write about being a dealer and what goes on across the table.

Summary: 24/7 : Living It Up and Doubling Down in the New Las Vegas
Review: A thoroughly entertaining book addressing many interesting nuggets of history and geography in addition to rewarding gambling anecdotes. I was, however, soured by the epilogue. Clearly, the publisher felt that the conclusion of Martinez's month-long binge lacked the necessary drama, thus insisting on a hastily written addendum (this is my hypothesis). For me and my friends, to whom I insisted they read the book, this undermined the genuine concept (a brilliant one to say the least) of the book.

Summary: A delightful perspective on the "new" Las Vegas
Review: Martinez's book is well written, but it's his wonderful sense of humor that makes it such a delight. The author goes to Las Vegas with $50K in his pocket and the assignment to write a book about losing it all. Alas, even though Martinez is naive in the world of gambling, he never runs out of money, all the while enjoying his comps and sharing his wild ride with the reader. At times the card-by-card reporting gets a bit tedious, but the book's good points overshadow the weaknesses.

Review: This book; diary written in a fashion that often leaves the reader bored. Some of his observations are almost child like. He is playing like a high roller and in one sentance talking about taking his wife to India; the next losing all of the money. I felt it was written by an amateur. OK if you've got nothing else to read.

Summary: 24/7 - Wild Ride!
Review: This was a very well written book depicting the life of a new gambler (book writer!) with $50,000 to win or lose. He instantly became a full fledged gambler enjoying many of the benefits given to high rollers. He wove in many stories of his exploits, including those of a perpetual gambler who you ended up feeling sorry for in the end. In all respects, this was an enjoyable book!

Review: If you're planning on visiting Vegas anytime soon (you should), or if you have already been there - this is a must-read. Martinez whimsically dashes through a month long frat boy's dream of a vacation. He perfectly captures the heights of ecstasy of winning and the despair of losing and somehow smirks at it all. This is good stuff.

Summary: Vegas - an entertaining perspective
Review: A humorous and revealing travelogue of an intense month of gambling and adventuring in and around Las Vegas. Would have been more fun to write the book than to have read it. At least you get the vicarious thrill. My only quibble is the play-by-play of his gambling ups and downs gets tedious. The out-of-casino experiences are more interesting. The book is in the spirit of Dr. Thompson's great work, but more tame.

Summary: High rolling, vicariously
Review: Anyone who has ever experienced the vagaries of gambling in Las Vegas will recognize the extreme highs and lows in Mr. Martinez's book. It is unique among all the books about Vegas because it takes us on a trip in front of the tables and lets us in on the feeling of victory and loss in the green felt jungle like none I have ever read, without judgement -- good or bad. We meet the normal, and abnormal, people of "Sin City" seeing it as both fantasy and reality. Expecially notable are the gambling scenes where we are made to feel the charge and angst that comes with placing one's money on the table and trusting to the Fates to give it back, with interest, to us, not to mention the feeling of staying too long or leaving too soon.
