Summary: GREAT BOOK!!! WRESTLING FANS MUST READ!!!
Review: Dwayne Johnson, a.k.a. the Rock, is a pro wrestler who IS "the People's Champion." His trade mark, an arched eyebrow shows his entertaining menace. The Rock quick talks his way with a fashion like no other and comes up with catch phrases like a standup comic. This book starts out when the Rock is young and covers his early days in high school and college. This is where it tells about the Rock's family, which in itself is a history of the wrestling sport. His grandpa, High Chief Peter Maivia, was a Samoan wrestler important enough to be buried in Diamond Head's crater, and his dad, Rocky Johnson, was boxer and the first African American World Wrestling Federation Intercontinental champ. In this part of the book it talks about he Rock's football career, which is my favorite part. The Rock was on his way to being one of the best defensive tackles in the country, but ran into a series of injuries, which hastily ended his dreams of football fame.

For a 27 year old, the Rock says some sincere and inspiring things. For one, he appreciates how others have helped him out. Also, he has a loving relationship with his lovely wife, Dani. It really impressed me that no matter where he is in the world, Dwayne Johnson always found the time during any day, to call his wife. To me that speaks a lot about true love. This book has it all: emotions, feelings, and some inspiring stories. The Chapters on Austin and Hart were well done.

Overall, this is a good book that I enjoyed reading. The Rock is without a doubt the best guy in all of the Wrestling World and it shows as Rocky is getting offers to appear in movies and television. I for one, having seen the MUMMY RETURNS, liked the movie and anxiously await the prequel, THE SCORPEAN KING. Rock, you truly are the most electrifying man in sports entertainment and are "Among The Premiere Entertainers" in all the world.

Summary: the rock says read this review......
Review: This is one of the best books that i have read maybe i feel this way because I am one of the biggest rock fans anyone will ever meet. But this book was really written well and it told a very good story describing the rocks(Dwayne Johnson)life story in its entirety. From his days growing up watching his grandpa and his dad compete to where he is now as the most electrafying man in sports entertainment. The one thing that I do believe is that this book could have waited a little bit longer before it was written simply because he has accomplished so much more since then. Other than that it was a great book and i reccomend it to anyone with an interest.

Summary: Rock's was ok ... Mick Foley's was a better read
Review: As my title states, I have read both of these best sellers. I liked the Rock's (Dwayne Johnson) book, but the fact that he is not even 30 years old yet and writing (mostly ghost written albeit) a biography seems premature. For argument's sake, think of this analogy. If Wilt "the stilt" Chaimberlin wrote a book when he was 28 and still in the NBA it would pale in compairison to what he wrote after all was said and done in his career.

Having said that analogy, the rock in his 3 year wrestling career could not give you great insite to the world of wrestling for 2 reasons. Most obviously is 3 years pro experience (I rated this a 3 star because of the 3rd generation wrestler prospecive no one else could give). The second reason is no one in their right mind would bite the hand that is feeding them a 7 figure income with a "no holds bared tell all".

If you are a rock fan, then buy it, you'll enjoy it. If you like or don't like wrestling and want some insite to what "sport entertainment" is about, Mick Foley's (15 year vet) book is a great read.

Simply said, 3 years in the ring insight vs. 15 years. Rock's book = ok... Foley's = great.

Summary: The Rock's book is solid
Review: After reading Mick Foley's excellent "Have a Nice Day," I didn't expect much from The Rock's bio because I thought it would be a rush job. Not so. "The Rock Says" is a solid, thoughtful read that encompasses a love story (Rock and wife Dany), his tough days in Canada trying to make a football career, the prejudice his future wife's parents felt towards him, and his appreciation of the wrestling stars who helped him during his meteoric rise. Although written with a co-author, the book exudes the spirituality, competitive athleticism and great humor of The Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson.) His descriptions of the long, lonely nights on the road, the needed isolation from fans who intrude on his private life, and the unfailing devotion of his wife and parents are really inspiring. There are a number of chapters in which The Rock assumes his in-ring personna and they're just as funny and entertaining as he is on WWF. Women will love the story about how he backed out of a threesome (Dwayne and two women) in college the night he met the woman who would become his wife. Men will enjoy his detailed descriptions of matches as well as his candid handling of his father's battle with alcoholism. This book is a must for any fan of professional wrestling, packed with photos and overflowing with an insider's view of the sport.

Summary: I smelt it, and it smelt bad!
Review: Dwayne Johnson may be one of the best WWF wrestlers to emerge during the 90's and maybe one of the best ever. But this book is on no recomendation list by me.

Firstly, this book was released probably cause of the fact that Mick Foleys hillarious best seller "Have a nice day" was a suprising, and funny book to read as Mick told his carreer history. But the rock obviously just decided to jump on the band wagon with this book. But it sufferes terribly.

It is way too early for a young superstar like the rock to bring out a biography type story already. This should have been held off for many years, instead it just seems like a quick way to make a buck!

The first half of the book tells you about Dwayne grwoing up, and his life story ect.... but just as things seem to be getting intresting...the book stops, theres nothing more to tell, and it pretty much goes into the charater of the Rock , and is written subtitles to things he has done in the wrestling world. It is just word for word dialog that he had said during WWF shows.

So the jib here, is that for the first half, your reading about Dwaynes life, from his young days to his college football days, then how he got into wrestling. Then it just turns into dialog from his charactoer THE ROCK's WWF performances.

Dont pay too much for this if your intrested. It is basicly a story of the real dwayne, then hundreds of pages of written in text ,word for word dialog from the wrestling shows. I'd suggest buying an autobiography od somebody when there storys are full and not just a few pages of there lives , then word for word scripts from the WWF days. You go from the kind man that is dwayne, to the ego charactoer of the rock which does not go well IMO.

When Dwaynes carreer is near or at an end, then he should write an autobigraphy....and HE should probably write it too. This book is not written by Dwayne. It is him sitting down talking to someone in an interveiw, and then they worded it for him. Then time ran out and there was nothign to talk aboutl, so they put in the subtitles from a few WWF performances.

My only way to describe this book: Avoid at all costs, borrorow it maybe? or dont pay alot... it is a real rip off.

Summary: Phil Yochim says ....
Review: While the Rock may be one of the greatest wrestlers in the game today, he's neither a great writer or storyteller.

The Rock Says ... follows closely on the heels of Mick Foley's successful autobiography, and apparently he believed because Foley wrote a great book, he could too. Too bad, but he was wrong, and ghostwriter Joe Layden didn't help any either.

The most annoying blemish of the book is the character shifts. All of a sudden, the voice goes from being plain ol' Dwayne Johnson to THE ROCK, which is unfortunate. Mr. Johnson is often more interesting than THE ROCK. When writing as THE ROCK, he repeats many of the catchphrases WWF fans have heard for years, and while they're exciting to listen to, they're tiring to read.

Another flaw of the book is just its timing. THE ROCK is at the height of his career, and he's got a lot more to come, much unlike Foley, whose wrestling career was beginning to wind down. So why write your memoir when you've got so much yet to accomplish?

The book isn't a loser, though. The reader has a good look and understanding of Mr. Johnson's personal and professional history, and his heritage, which probably plays a larger part in his career than most realize. Under the shadow of THE ROCK, most fans have forgotten he is the WWF's first third-generation champion and superstar. It was also interesting read about his daily routines and a few of his personal beliefs, something Foley neglected in his first book.

The Rock Says ... is also a story of dedication and success. Mr. Johnson arose from his status as a mediocre student and washed-up football player to becoming a near-overnight success.

I would recommend this book to any wrestling fan, especially aspiring wrestlers, just to show them success can be had, but it can be a long and miserable road to get there.

Summary: A Good Read 4 Those Who Enjoy Wrestling & Behind the Scenes
Review: This book starts out when the Rock is young and covers his early days in high school and college. This was by far the best part of the book. Then the early part of his WWF career is the subject. Once the book gets to the actual ROCK character the text changes to in-character dialogue with no personal insight into Dwayne's mind. Finally there are some chapters about the Rock's feelings about the business and a heartfelt chapter about Owen Hart. Overall this book isn't nearly as good as Mankind's book, but that would mostly be due to the ghostwriter that was used and the fact that Rock's career is 1/3 of Mick's in length. I must say that this is a must buy for ANY wrestling fan because of all the behind the scenes and insight, but for those trying to get a real grasp on the industry, check out Have A Nice Day! instead. Oh yeah, there are some pretty good pics throughout the book if you are into having that kind of stuff in an autobiography.

Summary: Two books, One binding
Review: I bought this book as I was interested to hear what the grandson of High Chief Peter Maivia and the son of high-flyer Rocky Johnson had to say. I was not disappointed whenever the writer paid tribute to the hard work of the professional wrestling pioneers mentioned inside of this quickly read book. However, as if the book had two authors, once the historical angle had been covered, the trash-talking modern style of writing crept in and mostly stayed put until the end of the book. I have not followed wrestling much over the past ten years, but of course I knew who the Rock was. Now that I know more, I wish Dwayne Johnson the best in reaching his goals. I also look forward to another book, written later in life, that more thoroughly details his grandfather and father and extended family. I recommend this book as appealing to two audiences, satisfying neither fully.
