Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: a superior treatment of the material Review: Joravsky's book is a thorough and honest portrait of the lives of two boys and their dreams of playing professional basketball. Unlike the original documentary film, the book explores each boy's family history, avoiding the cliches and staginess which render real life as caricature. Instead, we get an honest, direct and compelling account of growing up poor and black in Chicago and of having the chance to chase a dream. A fast read that captures the excitement of the game of basketball. Recommended for youths and adults alike; for classroom and recreational settings.

Everyone wants to go to the NBA. The odds are 7,600 to 1 that a high school basketball player will reach the NBA. Hoop Dreams narrates the lives of Arthur Agee and William Gate's remarkable careers. It tells you their journeys from the playgrounds of their childhood to their high school competitions and college recruitment. If you're a real ball player you will love that. Hoop Dreams also made an impact on me because it talked about Arthur and William's families and relationships in a way I can relate to in my life. I recommend this book because it gives you a dream and a goal that you can achieve in life. If you don't read this book you just might not be a real ball player. It brought me passion and inspiration that lifted me up and made me want to continue on playing basketball and being successful.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Hoop Dreams Book Review Review: The book Hoop Dreams is about the amity of Arthur Agee and William Gates who are both resolute in their goal to make it to the NBA. The author, Ben Joravsky, starts the book off with a powerful and inspirational introduction by Charles Barkley. Ben Joravsky, is innovate and uses provocative methods to keep the reader servile to the book Hoop Dreams. Joravsky keeps the reader interested by telling the lives of two teenagers who were scouted to play for a high school called St. Joseph. Both Arthur and William deal with both arduous and tenacious obstacles that repress them from being successful. Ben Joravsky's book Hoop Dreams is inspirational and connects with teenagers who play sports and dream to play for a professional team. I recommend the book Hoop Dreams to anyone who wants to make it in life. The book shows you that you have to be determined and pursue your dream.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Up From the Slums Review: Up From the Slums In Hoop Dreams, Ben Jorausky gives an exemplary outlook on the life of Auther Agee and William Gates. Hoop dreams is a touching and compelling story. This book gives the reader a deep insight on the lives of teenagers with professional dreams. By stressing the facts of every day life in a ghetto community Ben Jorausky repeatedly makes connections with the reader. This book is educational and is also a reality check. The author reaches out to all types of people who do not understand the life of a player and the efforts that are put into professional sports. I recommend Hoop Dreams to any young male or female who has aspirations of becoming a professional athlete, it is also an important book for people who do not take into consideration the hard work and time consuming efforts that are put into athletic careers. I give Hoop Dreams 5 stars.
