Rating: Summary: Don't read this if you're looking for an ultramarathon book. Review: Modzelewski's a decent writer, but he suffers significantly from the "look-at-me" mentality that afflicts many ultrarunners, probably the result of having grown up under the shadow of his famous father.I've run over 20 marathons, including several ultramarathons. The literature on ultramarathons is sparse, I was impressed by the high ratings seen here, so I jumped to buy it. What a disappointment! It should be titled, "A Memoir by Michael Modzelewski, and Angeles Crest." Modzelewski sounds like a fairly good guy, but who cares that he lost his virginity to a European prostitute (for free, of course)? And then there's the poor tale of being one of the best received Cosmo men in the magazine's history, and the annoying interruptions that it created in his life. His sex life isn't that interesting. He's not John Holmes, nor is he his father. And that's O.K.! Going through life as an un-famous person is no big deal, most of us do it everyday. Attempting to make yourself out to be bigger than you are is somewhat pathetic. Note to author: You've got the insight of an ultrarunner, and a good one at that, but save us the details of your sex life and tell us more about your running -- or just remove 50 to 70% of what's in the book. Lastly, the description of the last mile of the race is a overdone -- actually, it's a lot overdone. If I remember correctly, he finished with almost 15 minutes to spare (to finish in under 24 hours). He could have literally almost crawled the last mile, and still finished within the desired time-frame.
Rating: Summary: A SOUL LIKE A SAIL IN THE WIND Review: Most people play it safe, secure, shut down by phantom fears. In this wonderful, life-changing book, Michael Modzelewski's soul is like a sail in the wind -- riding the flow of the Universe and like Ulysses, he has a wide array of amazing, mythic odyssies. A rare writer--Michael is both a man of action and a scholarly scribe who conveys all the depths, magic and what is possible when living a life without limits.
Rating: Summary: Keeping the pace within Review: Mr.Modzelewski has written an impressive book that not only affects the spirit, but the physical being as well. We travel through each grueling mile at an exact pace with him as he relates electrifying stories which keep him going that extra mile and us turning the pages. I really felt as though I were running with him. This is an excellent choice for any person who has experienced an awakening that has affected their spirit, their soul, their very essence. In Mr. Modzelewski's case it led to an outstanding performance of a difficult marathon, a bonding with his family and a soaring of the spirit. I could not put it down and I can't wait for his next work!
Rating: Summary: EXTRAORDINARY Review: No matter what the subject matter all books address: "Why are we here? and "How best to live this life?" The answers that Michael Modzelewski comes up with in ANGELES CREST blew me away: made me re-think my entire approach to living! If an author can get that deep into your heart and soul I say he is successful. (And big props to Michael for his courage to live a life far beyond the norm. Some men are not meant for the ordinary, and we are all the better for it.
Rating: Summary: What A Life! What a Writer!! Review: On the strength of Michael Modzelewski's great first book, Inside Passage, I decided to read his second. Angeles Crest is so amazing! I'm not very athletic and many book worms aren't, but don't let the subject here of running stop you from reading this book. The running is just the doorway, the way into such incredible experiences. I've re-read Angeles Crest four times now and with each reading I find another nugget that so enriches my life. What a shining golden Soul this man has. He's figured out "what it's all about" better than anyone I've ever read. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: A Peak Performance! Review: The mystic & author Gurdjieff wrote that most people go through life asleep -- never coming close to realizing their full potential as human beings. Michael Modzelewski, in ANGELES CREST, is fully Awake! Not only does he takes us through a 100 mile ultramarathon in wild country, but he also goes the full-distance within -- an amazing exploration of Internal Territory. If you want to see a human being fully alive, operative in ways I never thought humanly possible -- read this! This book, this man is a Life-Changer. You will never be the same, after you turn the last page....
Rating: Summary: Highly Evolved Review: The world is big but M. Modzelewski's soul is bigger and it outshines the sun! Angels walk this earth (and sometimes run!) for there's lots of work to be done.
Rating: Summary: Angeles Crest is an amazing story of man's potential Review: This book is one you will have to read cover to cover. An ultra marathon runner describes the ultra run as well as the catalysts which helped him along the way. Not only does the book give insight into the runner's mind and describes the physical endurance qualities required for such an effort, it also inspires the reader to put forth a better effort to improve one's own abilities. I must say after reading this book I immediately quit smoking cigarettes. Also of major interest was the writer's ability to express his experiences and views regarding "higher life forms" which each reader will have to interpret personally. This book inspired me to change my life better and I believe it would do the same for any reader. The writer is certainly not writing for fame or fortune, but to share the love and experiences he has allowed himself to find over the years. (I must add I am not an avid reader, but could not put the book down)
Rating: Summary: An intimate and inspirational book Review: Using his account of the superhuman-like training and performance in the Angeles Crest 100 mile endurance run, the author shares his reverence for life and his spiritual experiences and insight. Michael has unabashedly opened his adventures to you, not only to entertain but mostly to share his spirituality. A few pages into this book and you will realize that you have been swept up by the author and invited to become a participant in his personal and spiritual life. Michael is a man of great charm, motivation, intelligence, fortitude and tenderness who is driven by love. The inspirational story he shares is one from which we are privileged to learn.
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter As A Man! Review: Want to know who Harry Potter grows up to be? Michael Modzelewski, a nature-based Wizard who in ANGELES CREST has found nearly all the Answers -- in real life. Absolutely amazing!
