Summary: Of Broad Value
Review: I coach volleyball and am not even particularly fond of basketball, but I found this book to be incredibly worth reading. Wooden may have coached athletics, but the lessons he shares from his own experiences trancend sports and touch on any undertaking. This book will be a permanent fixture in my library.

Summary: UCLA is the best
Review: I loved this book. It is a must read for Wooden and UCLA fans. Learn about the greatest college coach ever.

Summary: A Highly Motivating Book
Review: I purchased this book as a hockey coach looking for an inspirational summer read. I was not disappointed. I agree with the eight other reviews as I came away quite impressed with the entire content. The most impressive aspect of this book for me was John's Christian Testimony. This is not an Evangelistic book, yet it gives a powerful witness from this great coach. I will be sharing qoutes, using the pyramid of success and many other components of his with my hockey players for many seasons. It has also given me an entirely new perspective on how my Christian faith and coaching can be compatible and complement each other. I highly recommend this book.

Summary: Great man...but the book is a little dated
Review: I recently heard an interview with John Wooden and was amazed at the sharp mind and dizzying intellect of the now 93-year-old former coach. Thirsty for more of the Wizard of Westwood, I picked up "They Call Me Coach" on my next trip to the library. Although an interesting read, I think more recent books by Mr. Wooden may have been better choices for my first selection.

In memoir style, Wooden recounts the lessons of his youth and how they shaped his moral fiber and were essential foundations for his coaching style. Coach Wooden outlines his pyramid for success, something all motivators of men should study. He also shares some of the wonderful philosophies with which he guides his life.

The one problem I had is that the book is now more than thirty years old and seemed to be written for an audience in 1972. Wooden spends chapters discussing his "recent" teams that featured many players long forgotten. But his thoughts and ideas are timeless and will be worth reading today and many years from now.

Summary: A Simple Message
Review: John Wooden is a coach's coach. His life and philosophy are simple but true. He set forth on his journey, and kept himself open to the possibilities of what he might become, and we are all richer for it. There is enough basketball in the book to satisfy the "junkie" but the book is really about being the best person you are capable of becoming.

Summary: More than basketball: a formula for winning in life.
Review: John Wooden thoroughly puts forth the principles that he practices in his life as a coach, former coach, and citizen. His trips through nostalgia are insightful and incisive. More than a book on how to play better basketball, it is more in line with how to be a better person. A must read for individuals who are working with children and adults and feel that high standards and accountability are important for them and their charges.

Summary: There's more to the Wizard than you knew...
Review: John Wooden was an inspiration to his players over the years. Now with this book, he is an inspiration to us all. His talent, his players, his faith -- all played a role in their success, and success to him was measured more by his young men than by any trophy case.
