Summary: A story that touches the heart and soul.
Review: THE MAN WHO LISTENS TO HORSES exceeded my greatest expectations. Despite my enjoyment of the HORSE WHISPERER, I had wanted to know so much more about the horse gentler. With this in mind, I found TMWLTH far exceeded my expectations. Monty Roberts led me through the most fascinating story I have read in years. In addition to his experience with horses, Monty brings us his own real-life drama of family secrets and self-destructive millionaires. Throughout the good times and the bad, Monty is the quintessential hero who conveys his quiet strength and humble spirit. With all the plot, action, characters and conflict of a best-selling novel, THIS is the book Robert Redford should be producing into a major motion picture

Summary: The most useful horse training book I've ever seen!
Review: Mr. Roberts captures a side of horse training described by Xenophon and a few others, but practiced by few owners and trainers. It is a must-read for anyone who ever comes into contact with that marvelous animal - the horse. He teaches, in a way humans can understand, the language of the horse. His methods are learned from years of observation of wild horses combined with compassion, thought, and common sense. Highly recommended, read this one and throw the rest away

Summary: Inspirational insight into alternative horse "breaking"
Review: Essential reading for anyone who works with horses. Monty Robert's sensitivity and understanding of horses is conveyed in an easy to read book. His methods for "beginning" horses - introducing them to man and the saddle are inspirational. This is a book that is worth having on the book shelf for the enjoyment of a first read and for ongoing reference.

Summary: Monty Roberts is a miracle worker!
Review: I have attended Monty Roberts' demonstration, and I was absolutely mesmerized. There were five horses, each with some serious behavioral problem (and you can't "fake" a problem horse with smoke and mirrors like some of Monty's critics seem to suggest). One by one Monty let these horses blow off a little steam, get to know him on their own terms, and finally approach him willingly without the use of a rope or anything. Then Monty proceeded to gently halter and saddle each one, including a very green yearling who went berserk thirty minutes earlier when its owner had tried to do the same thing. In one instance a horse demonstrated a pathological fear of getting into a trailer and it took six adults to get her anywhere near the opening, but after about forty minutes she was walking alongside Monty in and out, in and out, without him pulling at her. It seemed like magic except that he explained every single gesture he made and we could see the horse responding to everything. It took a while, and if you read the book you'll see how he did it, but it suddenly made so much sense that I couldn't believe how stupid people (including myself) can be regarding horses and failing to "listen" to what they are telling us.

Monty Roberts has received some negative press, mostly spurred by his family because there is a history of abuse and jealousy there, and this is unfortunate because his story is worth reading and his techniques are brilliant. You don't have to be a horse person to appreciate this book. It can teach all of us to be more open and compassionate to every living animal and person.

Summary: Great Gift for Horse Lovers and Riders
Review: Monty Roberts has done the horse world a great service by sharing his non-violent training methods with us. His love of horses leaps off of every page as he describes the old training ways of his father and the conflicts and punishment he endured to continue with his training methods using horse language and body language. This is a pleasure to read and a learning tool to teach all of us who work with horses how to understand their fears and gain their trust.

Summary: A compelling life-story and informative book
Review: Read this book. Then, if you have read the Horse & Rider article and question the book's truthfulness, go to Monty Roberts' website and read his rebuttal.

I am a brand-new owner of horses, and had almost NO idea what I was doing. Using only the information I got from Monty's book, I was able to saddle and ride my horse in one day. (Yes, I did have some riding experience.) It did take me more than 30 minutes. Not surprising since it took me 20 just to straighten out the bridle!

Anyway, I wouldn't pay to much attention to what Horse & Rider had to say. Monty PROVES on his web-site that the article contains lies, misquotes, and garbled truth.

Summary: Learn to communicate with the most impressive creatures!
Review: I have loved horses for the past 13 years, but only got a chance to start riding and being around them three months ago. I read this book last month and even though I am no horse-trainer, I could use the ideas to communicate better with horses. I got rid of my whip (which I hated having to begin with) and found that the horse I ride is now happier and more cooperative. While she tried to bite me alot in the past now she rests her head on my shoulder when I'm near her. It is lovely. Even some of the horses that do not like humans to be around them are starting to accept my presence. Truly the feeling of being able to communicate with such magnificent creatures is the best feeling in the world. By writing this book Monty Roberts wanted to help make this world a better place for horses. My opinion is that he did help to a great extent. I believe that if horses could speak human language, they would say: "Thank you, Roberts." But for now I say it! THANK YOU ROBERTS FOR ONE OF THE GREATEST HORSE BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ.

Summary: A heart-warming read for anyone.
Review: I have not read too much biography, but I really enjoyed this man's story. I read "The Horse Whisperer" a while back, and enjoyed it immensely. For that reason, I decided to read Monty's story. I know next to nothing about horses. I wouldn't know what a hackamore is if I got hit by one. I barely know what a foal or a filly is, or a colt. To me a bay is an inlet of water! Thanks to the school secretary, who used to train horses, I now know the meaning to these terms. But I still enjoyed the story of Monty Roberts. Here is a man who stuck to his dreams, despite the ridicule and abuse he received from others, even his own father. Here is a man who, despite a "malady" in his eyes, has learned the language of horses by watching them in the moonlight as a boy. While others talk about peace in the world, here is a man who is doing something about it, bridging the gap that exists between human beings and animals. Here is a man who, despite advanced years, went out into the wilderness to do what he did as a young man. Here is a man who has met the Queen of England, and helped her out as well. Though I have no horse-sense at all, I enjoyed this book, and you will as well.

Summary: Best Horse Book!
Review: Excellent book for anyone that wants to learn the language of horses in order to better train and work with these highly sensitive animals. Mr. Roberts has developed an intelligent and humane method of working with horses that is extremely effective - he has the records of success to illustrate that. This is one of the best books I've read on how to win the trust of a horse and have a wonderful companion as a result.
