Rating: Summary: Are you really listening? Review: A story of a man's life and the adversity he overcomes, from his father to his business associates. He finally get the recognition he deserves - but most of all he brings us in touch with the fragility of the horse. A MUST READ for anyone that deals with horses - we must preserve the horse's spirit, not beat it down.
Rating: Summary: Gifted with the Language of "Equus" Review: The most inspiring book that I will ever read about horses and the life and dedication to them by the most extraordinary man, Monty Roberts! I was in tears the moment I read the dedication, not to mention throughout the book. Monty Roberts has struggled with an abusive past, overcome the skeptics, and has won over the Queen of England (also a true horse lover). His life has been dedicated to understanding, teaching, learning from, and spreading the language he terms as "Equus" - a gentle and sensible way to communicating with horses. His methods can be applied in many ways, to humans as well as animals. His story is fascinating and compelling to all - read his story and embrace his lessons of life! Thank you for all you do and continue to do Monty Roberts!!
Rating: Summary: I loved it! Review: Monty Roberts will teach you about horses, people, and about yourself. I couldn't put it down. I am making all my friends read it.
Rating: Summary: Amazing book, should be required reading for everyone Review: I saw Monty on Dateline and had to get the book. I must say, it is great reading. Unfortunately, I see too many of the reviews taking it literally, horse starting. This is a must read for anyone who works with horses in any capacity. I fell into horse starting by accident - had a foal we didn't know was coming (don't ask, I was 9 years old) and later bought a starved horse I couldn't ride. Because I was abused, I had no one to confide in and my horses, dogs and cats became my confidants. As I result, those that I did this with were connected to me, very deeply and the other animals around were more like pets. I heartedly recommend this book, if you love to read, want to read an inspirational book, or would love to be connected to your horse, rather than feared or misunderstood, here it is in a wonderful read.
Rating: Summary: A sweet man shows what happens when one honors animals Review: I bought and read the British edition of this book about a year ago, just before flying back from Edinburgh to Poland, and began to devour it on the way to London. Between planes I called his agent. And next Spring we will be publishing the Polish edition. I read "The Horse Whisperer" and loved it at the start, hated the ending. (An author who needs to kill off a major character to make the plot end neatly is amost a murderer as far as I'm concerned, especially if I liked the character.) Monty Roberts' book isn't quite so dramatic, but it's REAL. And it gives a sense of what happens, what CAN happen, if one respects other creatures, - both human and non-human. Horse lovers should read it for the horse element, but everyone should read it for Monty Roberts' sense of humanity, and for a good story, - which is both real and has a well-earned happy ending. A lot of books which make you feel good leave you with the uncomfortable awareness that maybe they aren't real. This one, after you read it, you can enjoy feeling good because you know that it IS real. Robert Gamble Media Rodzina of Poznan
Rating: Summary: A lesson in the language of animals Review: It opens up the subject of communicating with animals. Its lessons are very concrete. At the same time, its a story of Monty Roberts; the story of how children grow beyond their parents; a story that you must be the best at whatever you choose to do; a story about avoiding over-dependency in a business deal. Read the Introduction last. Lawrence Scanlan, who does a great job with the story, rambles without a point during the Introduction. Indeed, he gives away some of the best parts of the story and provides little enlightenment to aid the story that follows.
Rating: Summary: Spiritual Touching Inner most line to Equus Review: Can't put down must finish. The weaving of his life and the horses are awe-inspiring! One can feel his emotions and smile at the situations he encounters. The gentleness pours through like a sweet drink of water. A book that truly touches the soul, even for the non horse lover
Rating: Summary: mont roberts, the man who listens to horses Review: A very emotional and well written story. All ages will benefit from monty's life experiences with horses and people.
Rating: Summary: Life story of child rodeo star who relates to horses. Review: This is more than just the life story of child rodeo star who learns a different way of training horses than his fathers' traditional violent method. From the beginning of his contacts with horses Monty Roberts knew he could relate in a way better than the harsh and cruel way his father taught him. But he could never know how those steeped in tradition would react to his abilities. Being able to talk a horse into allowing itself to be rode in under an hour rather than the two to three weeks it usually took, should amaze those who wathched. But time and again he would prove his skill, only to be berated and dismissed. It wasn't until after the Queen of England called would it no longer be considered a fluke. The ups and downs of his career, the love of his life who he married, and the triumphs and tragedies of his friends all make for excellent and emotional reading. Today Roberts is trying to promote his non-violent methods in relations with others as well from his California farm near Santa Barbera. A good book for more than just dealing with animals, but also in learning how to read signs and indicators from all species, including human.
Rating: Summary: Monty Roberts is one in a million. Review: "One man in 10,000 knows horses yet I meet one every day." This old saying emphasizes how few horsemen there really are, yet how many masquerade under big hats or big talk. Separating real cowboys from all those in boots is easy; separating out the real horsemen takes a little longer. But Monty Roberts is in a class by himself or, at the very least, has few peers. His is the new paradigm that may change forever, for everyone, the way that horses are trained and managed. Perhaps he is not the first but what Monty does was not handed down, nor read in some ancient text. Developing his approach took vision, talent...and as we have read.. courage. When you meet Monty Roberts, shake hands with one in a million!
