Rating: Summary: Should be required reading. Review: The Man Who Listens to Horses should be required reading for anyone who owns or is considering purchasing a horse; or for that matter, any animal. Cruelty and abuse only teach fear---it's about time the human race learned to communicate with animals in their language. "Different" does not mean they deserve less from us than we expect from them.
Rating: Summary: I LOVED IT! Profoundly grateful for Mr. Robert's gifts! Review: I have always hated cruelty, to all animals and especially to God's finest work, the horse! I am profoundly grateful for Mr. Robert's gift of understanding Equus and his willingness to help others do the same, as well as in so many other ways. He truly has made the world a better place for horses! He truly has made the world a better place! A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!
Rating: Summary: Not as good as The Whispering Horse Review: The plot was transparent and the characters didn't move me.
Rating: Summary: An inspiration for all mankind, animal-lover or not. Review: Monty Roberts has documented a true tribute to the nobility and honesty of horses. He has finally voiced what many have always believed. Horses are not animals to be broken, but animals who will give everything for you once you have earned their trust. It is about cultivating lasting and effective relationships. This revelation can be carried over not only to other species but within our own. Much is learned regarding effective communication that can be utilized in all facets of one's life. It is inspirational, well-written and memorable. I highly recommend it to all mankind.
Rating: Summary: Not just another horse book... Review: Monty Roberts is a revolutionary in his own right. He has fought no violent wars, he has not ever raised his voice or his hand in anger, and he deals with all creatures in a calm, kind manner. And that is precisely why he is not recognized as a revolutionary, and yet he is a revolutionary of the greatest kind: peaceful.
Although The Man Who Listens To Horses is Mr. Roberts' first book, it is well written, and, despite the fact that it is an autobiography, entertaining. Mr. Roberts tells of his childhood, growing up with an abusive father who dealt with his horses and children with the same tool: cruelty. He then goes on to decribe the way in which he discovered a new kind of horse training, one based on kindness and trust, and how it proceeded to take the world by storm, starting with a few neighbors, and ending up at the Buckingham Palace stables. Mr. Roberts' training philosophy is now more prevalent than the old manner of training, that of cruelty and fear, although Mr. Roberts has not been recognized as one of the primary founders of that philosophy until now. His book, which almost
seems like a far more realistic response to Nicholas Evans' The Horse Whisperer (although the main character of that book was based upon Monty Roberts), reveals the methods of his training and the particulars of his practice, supplemented by well told anecdotal stories from his past experiences. All in all, this book was fantastic, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone; it helps if you are interested in horses to begin with, but everyone could always stand to be a little better educated about horses, and in turn, themselves.
Rating: Summary: the man who talks to horses Review: I loved this book,a person doesn't have to beat an animal or person for its respect. I come from a very abusive home. My dad is an alcoholic and is a very abusive man and still is when I was growing up. So I would escape to my uncle's horse racing farm in Montana every summer. Unfortunately my uncle used the same cruel method " sacking out" to break his young horses. It was heartbreaking to see these horses being treated so cruel. As I read " the man who talks to horses" I can relate to what monty went though as a kid. I cried. I have gotten help now and I am okay. I still have flashbacks though. I still don't talk to my dad to this day, and its okay I am peace with myself. I work with kids that have been abused, and with patience and love they will be fine. I hope that everybody will read this fine book. It shows that with patience and love you can accomplish anything. Natasha
Rating: Summary: This man 's heart is as big as the horses he loves. Review: I loved this book on several levels. First, being a horse lover I appreciated the many treasures on horse training that were sewn throughout the book. Second, the spirit of Monty Roberts, man and boy is delightful in spite of the strange and often cruel childhood that he endured through dedication to high ideals of honesty and hard work. I was moved to tears. Third the stories of time he spent in the very movies that I loved as a kid were very enjoyable. I highly recommend this book!
Rating: Summary: I loved It Review: I really liked this book because it did not only tell you of the times that Monty Roberts was in the spotlight with his astounding methods of "starting " horses, but how he learned his amazing techniques from the mustangs in the desserts near his home growing-up, and how he resented his fathers cruel methods of "breaking" horses. Also it shows that Monty Roberts is not just a miracal worker, in it for its' money and entertainment, but he is really in this for the eques race, when he tells everyone ,at the back of his book, how to start a horse, like he does. This man is truely a hero for not just horses, but all animals.
Rating: Summary: A must for any horse owner/lover. I loved it! Review: It is truly a payment of a debt to all the horses of the world trained by any other method than this. Mr Roberts offers insight and understanding where only force and cruelty played a large part. I respect him for his ideas and determination and I applaude him for his perserverance when everyone else said he had failed. Lisa R Jones- horse owner
Rating: Summary: A good combination of life and animal talk Review: I have to read this book to my partner. This is the first time I have read a book that he has found this interesting. He has been with horses for 30 years. Monty's storytelling abilities are tremendous.
