Rating: Summary: Humorous, capitvating, and spellbinding Review: I looked forward to Linda's story every night until it was all gone. I was a little crestfallen that it was over and wish she would come out with another story in the near future. She opened a world for me of an exciting and dangerous profession that few people knew much about and described the intense relationships that the fishermen depend upon to survive and thrive. Fishing is in their genes and doing anything different is not good enough. Linda writes as well as she can catch swordfish. Please Linda! Give the world more of your talent.
Rating: Summary: Linda Greenlaw is my hero!!! Review: One of the best books I've read in a long time. I would really like the thank Ms. Greenlaw for writing such a great book from the female perspective. Makes me feel like I can do ANYTHING! The greatest! Mary Carlson
Rating: Summary: Good but no "Perfect Storm" Review: I guess I was expecting more. I suggest reading it but don't expect the same type excitement you may be trying to find again as in " The Perfect Storm"
Rating: Summary: Greenlaw at Salem State Review: I saw Linda Greenlaw and Sebastian Junger speak last night at Salem State College and it only furthered my appreciation for The Hungry Ocean, and the diverse achievements of Greenlaw. She told a story of being on Cape Cod after the book was published, and having been approached by a woman who observed, "You look like Linda Greenlaw." Greenlaw was surprised, flattered by this and responded, "In fact, I am Linda Greenlaw." The woman then responded, "Your book stinks." A person couldn't be more wrong. It occurs to me that often those who are critical of an account like this are displeased in some way with themselves and their failure to make a mark on the world. Greenlaw's book is written with a humor that's made even more enjoyable by her astute observations of life, survival, and a love of challenge. Her insights, about her life and the lives of her crew, can be held even more closely by knowing that The Hungry Ocean was written by someone who can haul a whale of a fish out of the ocean, and just as eloquently, put pen to paper.
Rating: Summary: a look at the fishing industry and the characters involved Review: a wonderful thought provoking book into the life and lifestyles of the american fisherman along with a look at the competitive nature of the fishing industry.
Rating: Summary: A solid, well written account of an unusual subject Review: Linda Greenlaw gives us a first person glimpse at the world of the long-line swordfisherman (NOT fisherwoman!) in today's competitive environment. To say the story is exciting would be an exaggeration but the book held my interest as well as any suspense novel. I really couldn't put it down. For a first book, it is extremely well written and the author has a remarkable feel for how much of herself to put into the narrative. I sincerely hope Ms. Greenlaw has another book in her to share with us!
Rating: Summary: Linda Greenlaw for Glouc Mayor; captain of our ship anytime! Review: Wow! 5 stars couldn't do it for Linda. Not only do I relish her words and life experience, I get to meet her in person. She's like the girlfriend you never had but at the same time a brother with the sea. I gotta tell ya ... she's wicked awesome! Okay, so I happened to be buying a little outfit for my daughter the other day downtown Gloucester shop. It said "Little Fisherman" on the right breast and it was an adorable outfit. The shopwoman said to me (because I was buying a stack of clothes that were daughterly designed) "ya do realize that's for little guys". I replied "obviously you have not read The Hungry Ocean?!" "Nope, none of that Hollywood stuff runs in here anyway". "Well, let me ask ya ... if Linda was running for mayor, who would ya be voting for anyway." She responded "Well, there is Tobey but nah. and there's that Scalifani but he ain't got much to say I don't know. I'm not sure about that lady Hubbard but I wish her luck!" "So whaddaya think about Linda?" "Say is that the lady who threw the television out to sea?" "Yea, something like that", I replied. "Well, if she can handle those boys, she can handle our boys." "If I ever got her to run, would you put a sign in your yard?" "Yea, but I gotta register first." So it goes in our fair hometown. Linda, if you are out there it's Ally and I would like to be yourcampaign manager! Come over for a drink anyway. Ta ta.
Rating: Summary: In a word, SUPERB! Review: If you read The Perfect Storm, you will love this book. I hope Linda will write another book giving the highlights of her career and most memorable trips. I am certain that everyone who reads this book will feel as I do and want more. Best of luck to Linda in all her life's journeys.
Rating: Summary: IT'S A KEEPER! LOVED THIS BOOK! Review: I'm a woman and love to go fishing. I loved reading this book. Couldn't put it down. If you love boating, fishing, or just plain old outdoor adventure, you'll enjoy this book. I just wish Linda had told us how to get around getting sea sick.
Rating: Summary: DID NOT WANT IT TO END Review: LINDA MADE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU WERE ON A BOAT WITH HER AND HER CREW. I ENJOYED THE FRANKNESS IN HER FEELINGS AS SHE WROTE. IT GAVE SO MUCH CREDIBILITY TO HER AS A WRITER AS WELL AS A SWORDBOAT CAPTAIN.
