Rating: Summary: Great true-life story; like Hemingway's best, but better. Review: Linda Greenlaw advances Hemingway's style in "The Hungry Ocean" aka "The Young Woman and the Sea". She uses H's basic style, while adding layers of nuance, humor, and understanding. Ernie would be proud. And you should read it. Someday it will be hailed as a classic. She spins great and true yarns, and makes this the most readable and hardest to put down, of any real-life adventure I have ever read or experienced in my 58 years, including a year in Vietnam.
Rating: Summary: Men and woman--fascinating; technology--confusing Review: Dear Linda, You have a terrific story to tell--actually, lots of them! You took me along on a trip I am never likely to make myself and for that I thank you. I learned so much about how humans can work, live, eat, even fight in a closed area for the month-long span of a demanding fishing trip. I learned how you find where the fish you seek can be found. I saw what total devotion to a profession can bring--the respect and admiration of others. However, your book sorely lacks the diagrams or photos which would help a landlubber from Kansas understand and better picture the equipment you use on the Hannah Boden. I never like to admit being lost in a book, but as you describe the important steps in preparing to fish, from leaders to beepers to "birds," I longed for some drawings or photos of the items to help me watch your crew assemble leaders or draw in line. This lack kept the book from being as fully informative and interesting as it might have been. Even so, your descriptions of the crew's personalities and the vagaries of life at sea make your book well worth the time. Sincerely, A Kansas reader
Rating: Summary: CAPTIVATING! Review: I am not much for reading books; however, The Hungry Ocean was the best book I have read in a very long time. I am now going to read The Perfect Storm!
Rating: Summary: A rivoting story, well written, couldn't put it down. Review: As a woman captain and a previous commercial fisherman, I throughly enjoyed Linda Greenlaws sense of humor and her strong personality. I thought the book was well written and gave a wonderful insight into the hardships of fishing and the art of living at sea. I highly recommend her book to any sea going person.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Read this before you sign-on any vessel. Review: The author tells it like it is. Very well documented but not too high tech. Does a good job of giving the reader the feeling of 'pressure to produce' that any boat captain feels.
Rating: Summary: A tough, funny journey to a different world Review: If it was an easy job, Linda Greenlaw says, it would be called "catching." What she does is called fishing, and Greenlaw paints a vivid, tough portrait of what it's like to take on the North Atlantic in pursuit of swordfish. She's the only woman skipper in the fleet, which makes her point of view slightly different, but luckily for the reader she spends most of her time realistically describing what it's like out there -- the human relationships, the technique of fishing, the grit and gristle of a truly different vocation. And she can be belly-laughing funny. A wonderful, engaging read.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book, Hard time putting it down. Review: I have never been much of a book reader until I read PERFECT STORM. I picked this book up and could not put it down. HUNGRY OCEAN is an excellent book about the lives of fisherman on the ocean. Great book.
Rating: Summary: This Book Is The Best I've Ever Read! Review: 1000 Words is not enough to tell you how wonderful of a book this is!
Rating: Summary: The book was both riveting and inspirational Review: After reading The Perfect Storm, I wanted to read more about this way of life. I received The Hungry Ocean as a birthday gift from my son and I found it very difficult to put down. The book was very inspirational. The fact that she was able to not only captain a swordfishing boat but to become "one of the best sea captains, period" was amazing "for a girl". I enjoyed every minute of this book and hope Linda writes another one.
Rating: Summary: A good look at the fishing industry Review: A good read. One or two illustrations of the geometry and rigging of the boat would help immensely. I got lost in all the descriptions of the gear.
