Summary: Hornby's book an instant classic
Review: Not only has Hornby written a book of superlative class full of street smart sensibility combined with wishful gullibility (how else do you describe the optimistic sports fan?), he has crafted the image of the typical sport fanatic in such an enjoyable and entertaining fashion that the book is impossible to put down. Mind you, being an Arsenal supporter has forced me to view the book through red and white glasses if you will. That aside, Hornby's book is an example of brilliant storytelling combined with the brutal honesty that often times is either missing or superficial among many of his peers. He writes of himself in a self depricating tone even though he knows his position is one to envy (who wouldn't love to have a passion that although is time consuming oftentimes also provides you with the motivation to get to the end of the day?).

A brilliant book, and one that needs to be emulated by a North American author to bring the message of the sport fanatic here to those who can't relate to soccer here in North America.

Summary: I've been misled.
Review: I feel that this is more of a biography of the author, rather than a book about Arsenal. This would not be so bad if the author had an interesting life. Unfortunately for the reader, (and Nick Hornby) he did not.

Summary: It's a book about a person, sport's just the excuse.
Review: The non sport fan thinks this book has real insight and imaginative thinking while the sport fan sees nothing but the things they have thought all there lives... It's a good book but why did he have to write about Arsenal's 2-0 win at Anfield.... Agghh.

Summary: The Best Hornby Book of All
Review: This book should be a must read for any American planning to spend an extended time in Britain. I arrived just after Christmas, mid point of the football season. By the time I left in may, Arsenal had won the double and a new fan. Hornby's book filled in the gaps. Football in england, the prose, the passion, the set upof the premiership parrallels closely to baseball here in the states. Man U - The Yankees, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City- The Red Sox, cubs, etc... It just goes to show that these passions, or obsessions are universal.

Summary: American sports fanatics must read this book.
Review: I found this book to wonderfully relate to my own fanaticism with my American teams. Hornby described not just himself, but me too. My life revovles around American football just like Hornby 's revovled around soccer. It was a great read. Because I feel like something of a kindred spirit, I have even become an Arsenal fan! I constantly watch soccer on cable television. An American following English Football! Hard for even me to believe. Go Gunnars!

Summary: Bitingly accurate portrayal
Review: Reading this book brought back all the emotions of my youth spent as a football fanatic in England. His story is uncannily similar to my experiences (our paths must have crossed twice at Cambridge Utd's games against Wrexham and Newcastle United) right down to supporting a different team than everyone else at your school and the price you pay for that. Well, ok, there's one big difference between him and me: I support Burnley, a team which has gone rapidly downhill during the time period under discussion! It can also be considered an accurate portrayal of a time gone by. With the advent of the Premier League, all-seater stadia and - thankfully - much diminished hooliganism within England, many of the experiences he describes no longer exist. Great book, very authentic.

Summary: One of the most fantastic sports books I've ever picked up.
Review: I finally found, in Fever Pitch, a book that could explain to others my rational (or lack thereof) during sporting events, as well as my ability to relate key events in my life to sports. As an aspiring sports writer and self-diagnosed sports addict, it was refreshing to see someone else who's life revolved around his desire to watch his team play at any cost. For Americans who don't understand the English fanaticism toward soccer, no other book could as effectively show this

Summary: A Must Read For All Football (Soccer) And Sports Fans
Review: The one thing that I share in common with Nick Hornby is my passion for Arsenal Football Club (The Gunners). However, this book is not an account of the club, but, rather his account of life in relation to his passion (bordering on obsession) to the club.

His views, observations, passion, cynicism and quick whit speaks volumes of his talent for story-telling. All sports / football fans will easily relate to his experiences.

If you enjoy this book I would strongly recommend you to read High Fidelity & About A Boy as well.

Summary: Passion on the football terraces - highly recommended
Review: Even though I hate Arsenal, I reluctantly started to read this book as I had been so deprived of football as a result of a long stay in Japan before a professional 'Soccer' league was created here.

This book made me realise that the pride, hurt, passion, fear, ecstacy and jealousies of Arsenal fans were very similar to that of fans all over the country. The Justice Taylor Report very effectively put paid to the era of terrace throngs, terrace songs & terrace battles and changed the face of the game in England within 5 years.

But at least and at last somebody eloquently described it all before it disappeared. Read this book, feel the passion and the nostalgia (and the bricks flying past your head!).
