Summary: Lombardi - Touchstone for his times
Review: From his days at Fordham, to the years with Red Blaik at West Point, standing alongside Tom Landry with the New York Giants and, finally, in the GLORY YEARS with the Packers Lombardi is a man described as determined, intense - ultimately - "football great". He is singular in purpose creating an ethos about "Winning as a habit". The genius of his offensive schemes (simplicity with options) resonates well in our time with the accelerating pace of change. Lombardi's legend of touching so many players by the way he lifted them to high achievement is carefully drawn and beautifully portrayed. This is one of those books where you race to pick it up and regret that it has to end.

Summary: When Pride Still Mattered
Review: Sports fans and Lombardi fans will enjoy Maraniss's well-researched, insightful and balanced bio - the good, the bad and the ugly. Leaders and managers will, more importantly, find it an essential professional read. I cite examples from the book in management development programs and recommend it to anyone who seeks to lead and inspire people.

Summary: Vince Lombardi and His Times; Forgotten Values
Review: An excellent book with an entertaining mix of sports history and cultural observation. Valuable as a time-capsule look at largely forgotten concepts of duty, honor and teamwork. Lombardi's emphasis on simple game plans precisely executed is a valuable example for business and other types of competition.

Summary: Best Sports Book Ever - Best Biography
Review: This is the best bio I have read. I felt I knew the man, the times, his family, and his team. If you are sports fan, this is a must. Noone comes close (even John Feinstein) to this book

Summary: Re-live the Glory Days of the Pack and the NFL
Review: When Pride Still Mattered reveals the great Lombardi at a time when America was beginning to discover the power behind pro football. Thanks to this book, I now understand the totality of this man and his influence on the fledgling NFL. This when the Sunday afternoon battles were disputed in the snow, mud and gravel of Lambeau field, the Polo Grounds and Wrigley Field. It was sad to learn of Vince's problems balancing the needs of his faith, family and teams. However, this conflict is business as usual in our society today and was not a revalation to me as much as a reaffirmation that Lombardi was a man, a good man who had great mentors that influenced his abilities to lead and manage the talent of the great Packers of the 1960's. The author reports Max Magee's comments on Lombardi's lack of usefullness on the sideline during games. I would point the author to the San Franciso 49's of the 1980's and the relative ease that coach Bill Walsh exhibited both in the locker room and side line. In one famous photo, Walsh is on his back in the locker room before a game napping on a bench while the players prep for the days activites. Vince had it on automatic. A system that was simple yet powerfull. The power in the huddle and hands of the quarterback, Bart Starr. That is the total fruition of leadership and management. Lombardi understood this. A great man and great American. My blood runs green and yellow. GO PACK GO!

Summary: Kudos to the author for a great book about a great man
Review: True greatness is not seen in all the glitter that goes with success. It is seen in the daily toil and struggle against whatever life throws at you. This book shows that Vince Lombardi was not perfect, his marriage was not rosy, and by his own admission he was not the father he should have been. Yet the book also shows that despite it all, Vince Lombardi fought against the odds, and mostly fought against himself, and he won. Vince Lombardi died at the right time, as the football world he knew, without big business and million dollar salaries, was crumbling all around him. His values are those of the shining knights of old, who stood for sacrifice of the individual for the benefit of the common good. This book does him justice, and it moved me to tears even as I read over snippets of it in the bookstore. This is why I bought the book.

Summary: The Greatest Coach Ever
Review: Vince Lombardi was a real hero of mine. I don't know why, I was a child of the 60's and he stood for many things I was against, but he struck a chord with me and I literally loved the man and am a life-long Packer fan as a result.

This is a good book. I get tired of the authors continued resurrection of Lombardi's weaknesses and his wife's need for alcohol. Once is OK, but after every Lombardi victory, the author is compelled to resurrect Lombardi's sad family life. It might be true, but I don't need to re-read about it in every chapter.

Summary: Excellent details of Lombardi
Review: This book is definitly the best book about Vince Lombardi. It is not all about football; there is things about his life and excerbs about certain people. This book may bore some of the readers out there who are not die-hard Vince Lombardi fans. This book, to me, was fasinating in how Vince led his life.

Summary: Winning is an ALL the time thing
Review: I long ago lost interest in professional football, but found this book irresistible. This is an excellent character portrait of a noble, honorable and admirable man. Well written, this book positions Lombardi within the context of his times. You find a man fiercely committed to perfection, to doing the right thing, to integrity and country. Without doubt, one of the best books I've ever read.

Summary: Lombardi
Review: I thought the book gave a great deal of background in the life of Vince Lombardi. At times it gave more information than is needed. If you are looking for a football only book this may not be the book for you. At times the book gives a lot of information that is redundant and the are several 2 to 3 page sections that will bore most people. I am a Vince Lombardi fan and parts of the book I found fascinating. I would not reccomend this book to the average reader. It is basically a biography. If you are a fan of Vince Lombardi, the Green Bay Packers, or professional football in the 50's and 60's then read this book.
