Summary: Great reading, A must!!!!
Review: I found that I was not able to put this book down. It keep me on the edge of my seat. Once finnished, I bought "The Climb" by Anatoli Boukreev, who was also on the same climb, only with a different team.

Kelev Schoening, who was also on this climb with Anatoli Boukreev, was speaking in my town and had this to say about "Into thin air" I quote from our local newspaper, "Schoening called Krakauer's book, probably the most accurate and honest - brutally honest - of those books that are out there" end quote. "Into thin air" is a must read.

Summary: The most amazing and fantastic book about real life
Review: One of the most important things I have read until know, was said by John, when men get thoughts mixed up between achiving a goal and loosing real sence of dangerous. Beside, the book shows us about determination and risks that we face in everyday life but not less dangerous than Everest. Thank you John.

Summary: Excellent story, dont miss it !
Review: What impressed me was that you can look at the pics of those who died, and wonder about them, about what happened there ... if you enjoy being touched by a true, human story, this is the book for you. It really emotioned me. Dont bother by the previous comment, its obvious that the author did lots of RESEARCH before writing. Anyway, I will try to read The Climb too to get another side of the story.

Summary: A great book for all, including those who'd never been there
Review: While I was reading this amazing book, I could feel myself into that terrible experience, as I was one of the clients who payed so much to have so many problems, even after it finished.

Summary: Jon Krakauer dosen't know what he is talking about!
Review: The author wrote this with an extreme sense of knowledge about everyone who was on Scott Fischer's expedition, which is strange, because he was on ROB HALL'S expedition !!! He makes a lot of the characters seem like complete fools, ex.: Sandy Hill Pittman, which they are not. Also, he barely gives Anatoli Boukreev (d.12/25/97-climbing accident) any credit for saving numerous lives. Krakauer was in a tent for the majority of the rescue, asleep, and he knows everything that happened? Fraid not ! For the TRUE story, read Anatoli Boukreev's book, THE CLIMB.

Summary: This book is so enthralling, it will be a one sit read!!!!
Review: I waited two months to get my hands on this book and boy!! I wasn't disappointed. Knowing the ending doesn't spoil the buildup of the tragedy that is this story. Jon lets the story unfold with good pacing and sad suspense that is this account of the forces of nature vs. the arrogance of human beings on Earth.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Good portayal of unbelievable contest b/t man and nature
Review: Sad to read of the futile expendature of so many lives. If not for this book, all these men would have died anonymously. This book is their legacy.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: wonderfully written; wonderfully sad
Review: Not a climber myself, I enjoy reading about challenging climbs. One of the first mountain climbing books I read as a child was about Mallory and Irvine on Everest. I also read about a Matterhorn disaster ("White Spider"?) The tragedy of what took place in May 1996 will be with me for a long, long time thanks to Jon Krakauer's powerful writing. Nevertheless, I hope to see the Imax film of Everest to see the mountain close up from the safety of the theater. Hats off to the Imax crew and all the others who helped in the rescue or who suffered and endured on the mountain. And hats off to Jon Krakauer for writing so convincingly of the climb and the emotions left in the wake of the tragedy. I hope amateur climbers will be more realistic about their goals in the future. Everest proved even the professionals don't know if they will come down from the peak.

Summary: Your heart will ache for the characters in this story
Review: I followed this in the news as it was happening and bought the book immediately when it came out (I knew the author's work from "Into the Wild"). I finished the book on the one year anniversary of the tragedy, and it was disturbing to think about what those people went through. Krakauer's writing is addictive. He is an excellent storyteller, and truly let me travel as close to Everest as I would ever want to go. I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone who loves reading about what the human spirit is capable of.

Summary: Krakauer takes you into the mind of a mountain climber...
Review: Although much controversy surrounded the accuracy of the book, I think Krakauer succeeded at something far more difficult than relaying the facts, he got into the minds of the climbers on that mountain. I have always been mystified by the drive of athletes who risk their lives to achieve a goal that is a let down when it is achieved. That is why Krakauer's books are so fascinating.

His book Into the Wild also takes you inside the mind of someone who dies while trying to accomplish his ultimate goal. Another must read from Krakauer...
