Rating: Summary: A great start in a fantastic sci-fi series.... Review: In this book you get introduced to Ray Larkin and his genetically engineered team of talking dogs. These aresn't cute little Scooby-doo dogs either. They're a trained military team craving a good fight in places of the galaxy that aren't ready for true human suburbia.
The whole K-9 Corps series is well written with the right mix of action, humor, drama, and conspiracy theories. We meet a young Ray in book 1 and he is sent off on his first mission to Chiron. The reader gets to know and bond with Ray and his team through a lot of sarcasm on Ray's part (I love the sly references to 20th century "historical" life). I reread the K-9 Corps over at least once a year just because the story writing is very tight, there isn't a lot of needless details, and the humor is witty remarks that don't detract away from the main objective. We share in Ray's happiness, question his decisions with his personal and professional life, and best of all just hang on for the crazy ride that always ensues.
If you continue on with the other 3 books in this series you'll see how the character grows and also how the dogs mature. The experiences on Chiron have many repercussions throughout the other books. You don't need to read this one to enjoy the others, but this one was a fine beginning to set the stage for the many adventures of Ray Larkin and his talking dogs to come.
