Summary: Disappointing...
Review: I got sucked into the Mission Earth series after reading the spectacular "Battlefield Earth" (the best pulp scifi novel ever). Unfortunately, after buying in hardback all 10 of these bloated episodes, hoping that they would lead to a great ending, I was sorely disappointed.

While the stories do have some of Hubbard's humor and some interesting satire, they don't have the cohesion, pacing or the characters of Battlefield Earth. It's not worth your time.

Summary: I can't believe it ended!
Review: I have read all 10 books in this series and I must admit I am not a big reader. But I found myself in bed at night with a small lamp reading until 2 or 3 in the morning because I just couldn't believe what I was reading. How close it is to present day life.

Summary: Great Finale - Surprise!
Review: I loved all of these stories. I could not stop once I started them. The pacing is great. The satire is great. Hubbard has a fantastic and witty sense of humor. These stories also really they get you thinking. Love them all.

Summary: Great Finale - Surprise!
Review: Thank the maker, we finally finished the series! Ten volumesof "satire" by L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology andcrusader against the evil psychiatric empire that drugs society and keeps the truth hidden from the eyes the world...what? You mean that just happens to be the plot of the entire "Mission Earth" series? Amazing! Could it be that L. Ron Hubbard used this book to give us his views of what he really believed about our society? Quite a few of the glowing five-star reviews of these books claim that this series is "close to real life." And during the series' introduction, in which he modestly redefines the entire concept of "satire," Hubbard notes that the idea of satire is to poke barbs at certain aspects of real life that deserve to be ridiculed.

So what is Hubbard telling us with this epic (or at least epic-length) series? If Hubbard is to be believed, then the entire world is locked in the tyrannical grip of a corporate empire that uses sex and drugs to keep the population properly sedate. Sexual perversions of all sorts are encouraged through evil rock music, while the evil corporations use the media to twist and distort the real truth at every possible opportunity. And when anyone dares to wake up and realize just what a state the world is in -- then it's time to unleash those most fearful and sadistic weapons, psychology and psychiatry, to crush the rebellion.

But don't worry...L. Ron Hubbard has bravely revealed the solution to the problems facing society! As a capstone to the series, "The Doomed Planet" spells out everything that needs to be done to save the world: namely, consolidate all the nations and peoples of the world into one single, benevolent corporation that works for the good of Mankind. We know this single corporation is good because "Mankind is basically good" (Hubbard's words, as quoted ad infinitum by Scientologists) and Mankind will never succumb to temptation as long as the evil demons of psychology and psychiatry are kept under lock and key, hidden far away from prying eyes by well-meaning censors. Of course, once the world is freed from the prison of psychology and psychiatry (referred to as "the psychs" within Scientology), then the evils of drugs and perverted sex will vanish. No one will have any need for them anymore, once the world is free!

Yes, says L. Ron Hubbard, "total freedom" is yours for the taking! But because the evil psychiatric conspiracy still dominates the world, Hubbard must reveal the truth to you under the guise of "satire," so that you can wake up and realize that only by casting off the shackles of psychiatric domination, then you will truly be free.

Isn't it coincidental that these views happen to be identical to the worldview expressed by the Church of Scientology -- which was founded by L. Ron Hubbard? Perhaps this is the true underlying purpose of the entire "Mission Earth" series.

So it is that "satire" mirrors real life.

Summary: A Riveting, Exciting and Captivating Crescendo!
Review: The final volume of the Mission Earth Dekology 'The Doomed Planet' is by far my favorite overall in this series. Hubbard takes the reader to a new height with a crescendo of action and intrigue. In this final novel we find the villian Lombar Hisst, the madman behind the entire Earth mission, ascending the throne of the Voltar empire after using drugs and other Earth vices on the Emperor and Lords of the confederacy. Meanwhile Heller becomes a fugitive and joins the exiled Prince Mortiiy's rebel army to engage in an invasion to overthrow Hisst out of Palace City. Meanwhile J. Walter Madison, the unleashed PR agent is trying to bring the house of cards down on Earth and bring about a full scale invasion by the Conderacy! This book is incredibly exciting as it brings to a glorious end all the tales within tales of this this great 10 volume series. Hubbard leaves no stone unturned as he brings the series to it's ultimate conclusion with the Apparatus (a Voltar type Covert operations organization) on the run facing extiction. The order starts to go into the society as the right criminals are prosecuted and jailed. The action throughout this book is in keeping with the excitement of the whole series. I found myself turning page after page on this final volume, staying up long hours at night reading, reading, reading, not wanting to miss a beat. The whole series is exceptionally wonderful as Hubbard makes simple, yet satirical observations on our own society and calls attention to our own absurdities in the world we live. He shows you Earth from different angles with humor and adventure all wrapped up in a fast-paced suspense. I found this wholes series to be riveting, but this final book to be extraordinarily captivating as the author brings all the roads of adventure he mapped in the ten part string of novels to an ultimate climax. I cannot say enough about this book and the entire Dekalogy, except that it is a giant amongst giants in Science Fiction. You will love the entire series! Volume 10 'The Doomed Planet' is a great book, and rides high on my list of ultimate favorites! I highly recommend you take time for this ten step journey. It's truly worth it.

Summary: Huh?
Review: This is the second book in this series where a reviewer mentions how realistic the series is. Huh? Are we reading the same books? So..real life is run by the IRS, all police officers are corrupt..the mafia runs the world...and someone out there is teaching everyone that homosexuality is the only way to live? It couldn't be less real.

This book is only readable if one has already read the first nine volumes. The only saving grace lies in that it's very easy to read..only 2-3 hours at most. Hubbard, or whoever wrote this volume, kept his sexual obsession to a minimum, thank goodness.
