Summary: Dreadstar Volume I & II, by Jim Starlin
Review: As hauntingly incomplete and missing some great original comic editions, Dreadstar is an artwork and philosophy second to none. Page after page of flying over the north pole, thinking, and "less important" missions were dropped. Nevertheless, whether you think about Spiderman or the Hulk which Starlin perfected, whether you are gay or het, Starlin is the Bob Dylan of comics and then some. Starlin is as pure as the orignal Martin Luther, while as complex as St. Augustine, both Augustinians. When it comes to line drawing, he is as perfect as R.J. Crumb. There are rumors that Mr. Starlin is all messed up, but he has drawn and story told right up there with Hesse. I have no knowledge of Jim Starlin. I do know that without mitigation he is one of the greatest line drawers in human history. He insisted with Dreadstar to especially tell an epic of love, philosophy, and with humor. Starlin never crossed the t's or dotted the i's. His productions makes the reader/observer beg for more, which does not happen. If you study Starlin's works, you just want more but he moves to another project. Starlin is like Doestevski's Brothers Karamozov or Clavell's Shogun, totally engaging. But the hapless reader is slain without redemption. Starlin provides no ending; he just moved onward to the next project...or maybe he just crawled into a cave?

Summary: Dreadstar Epic Comics re-release compilation review Jim Sta
Review: I haven't actually read this version but I know it's a b/w re-release of Marvel/Epic Comics single-issues from the early 1990's/late 80s. Exactly which issues and how many, I don't know (it will be culled somewhere approx from issues 7-20). Anyone else know? As a fan, I would recomend you get the original issues instead of this b/w reprint on cheaper paper. The story & art itself is top notch. A great story. It's very 'Star Wars' for those of who who don't know. The story: read 'The Odyssey' & 'The Price' for backstory. It's about warrior Vanth Dreadstar, wielder of a magic sword, who teams with a sorceror named Syzygy Darklock, a blind telepath named Willow, a smuggler named Skevo, and a catman named Oedi, against an evil galactic federation named The Instrumentality, run by a sorceror guy named Lord Papal. The Instrumentality is in a war against The Monarchy, which runs the other half of the galaxy. This story is set 1 million years in the future in a time where magic & science are commonplace. This particular book is about Lord Papal's right hand man named 'Z' who may or may not be Vanth's old friend Akhnaton, whom Vanth had thought he killed and left for dead years ago. Both Z & Akhnaton were missing their right arm. Z always wears a helmet so we can't see his face. Coincidence?
