Summary: Loss of humour justified...
Review: I don't agree that Applegate should be criticised for making Marco more serious here. Consider the situation (if you can't remember read the recap in the first chapter of each book!): everyone is now an utter mess psychologically. Hence the loss of humour. Plus the point, in terms of character development, of the Marco books is to show us that there's more than just his facade of jocularity. To be a 'rounded' character, he needs to be able to explain himself, to be dark, to have flaws. Et voila, we have this book.

Personally I thought this was one of the best since about #29: plot AND character advancement, as well as an interesting premise. Plus the truncated, disjointed sentences seemed to be a little in abeyance. Even the obligatory pop-culture references (Hanson, take a bow) are better executed than of late. It really affected me emotionally (sob)...

Summary: Marco has been cheated of the humor he deserves....
Review: Okay, I liked the book because it would connect into "Visser" later on, but on a whole it's just a story that drags on about "Oh, my Dad's going to get remarried and I can't morph right because of it!"

Applegate knows very well that Marco is the comic relief of the Animorphs, but she (or one of those other writers she acknowledges at the start of the book) decides to keep it quite and have the Animorphs investigate this one TV personality who is trying to recruit for The Sharing. It was just like #31 The Conspiracy:they don't get anywhere and nothing really changes no matter what they try. However, the scene with Hanson and the bugs on the food in the hotel is funny, and when Marco is attacked in the hotel kitchen. Still, no matter what happens the fans know that Marco's mom is still alive, or else "Visser" wouldn't be coming out, and that just spoils the anticipation of wondering if Visser One is still around. It's just too predictable.
