Summary: The perfect gift for the Trek fan of any persuasion!
Review: This audiobook is from the Alien Voices series, but unlike their other titles, it is an original script, featuring two of Trek's most popular characters. If you miss either or both characters on the screen, this is the closest to hearing something new from them. It is recorded live, and in a way I wished it had been a videotape, so I could have seen the expressions on the actors' faces while they performed the text. Judging by the audience reaction, they must have been priceless. It is a very funny script, full of jokes, and a lot of verve. Spock was perhaps a bit more jocular than I remembered him, but Q was spot on. There were many great lines that, despite what I said earlier, really made me forget it was just an audiobook, because I could visualize the character in my mind very clearly. 'You've been manipulating me!' Q clamors at one point, and just the tone of De Lancie's chamaleonic voice brings the character to life right in front of your eyes. I'll be listening to this audiobook again and again!

Summary: Nemoy Vs. De Lancie
Review: This may not be what you expect. It isn't a radio drama like "The Shadow" or "The Green Hornet," but it is more like listening to Jack Benny or "A Prairie Home Companion." It is a casual and laid-back-and frequently funny-dialogue between Spock and Q.

However, at times, it transcends the TV characters and becomes a verbal spar between Nemoy and De Lancie. Nemoy as Spock is calm, collected and gentle, with that grave and steady voice that is fun to listen to. Despite being unemotional, Nemoy-Spock has that dry and nuanced with that reminds of Socrates. De Lancie plays Q as that fun, bouncy, and spoiled-brat that reminds us of a cocky teenager with a drivers license and a full tank of gas.

I'm not sure if the plot is weak, or if it just low-key. But it does sway before these two talented actors playing their memorable characters. I wonder if there is the germ of a TV special here? Was anyone keeping a video tape of the discussion?

Summary: Star Trek Smackdown
Review: What a great idea. Two of the Star Trek sagas greatest characters come together for a lively "discussion", a meeting of the minds if you will, between former Enterprise first officer Spock and the omnipotent Q.

Leonard Nimoy and John De Lancie know their characters so well that while listening to this recording, it's easy to imagine them in full costume in front of a live convention audience. The set up is this: An asteroid is hurtling towords Earth, Spock travels back in time to try and prevent the exstiction of all mankind and the next thing you know Q pops in for another visit. The oppotunity allows for these legendary beings to comment on the human condition. Something Star Trek at its best does very well.

The verbal sparring harkens back to those great "discussions" between Spock and Dr. McCoy (The late great DeForest Kelly) from the original series. The script by Cecelia Fannon has plenty of humor and it's a tribute to the talents of Nimoy and De Lancie that makes all of this seem natural--as opposed to something scripted.

As part of the Alien Voices series, concieved by the two actors, the program runs for nearly an hour. Who wins the match is up to the listener. Recommended.
