Summary: This Book is a Must Read
Review: I recently purchased this book. I have always been a fan of fantasy books that take place in the confines medieval times. I have read such fantastic series as the Dragon Lance. Yeah, I am talking about the kind of books that avid Dungeon and Dragon players can only dream of. After the Dragon Lance series I had noticed that some of the widely published epics have slowly declined in quality. I think the lure of money created such a rush that many books were not the artful works that the authors had envisioned. At a certain point I began to read many books by unknown authors. My experiences were quite rewarding as many books were well done. It is a fair assumption that there are far more talented authors out there who have not achieved commercial recognition than there are that have. In addition, many that have this recognition are not the greatest talents but merely had the right connections (the holy grail to entering the entertainment world).

Of the unknowns, Fortress of the Fallen has to be the greatest book I have ever read. I surprised myself when I refused to read this book in more than one setting. I read this book straight through on one Saturday afternoon. Like a true epic series, the story was not dull and simple but rather quite incredible, creative, and fresh. The collection of characters both good and evil had very distinct personalities that were well developed and consistent. Just as I found myself admiring some of the heroes in the Dragon Lance series, I so did with the characters in this book. The author, Guy Stapp, has a witty sense of humor and that can be experienced as well.

I don't wish to go into the story. As I mentioned before the story is well crafted and there exist many layers to it. To provide you with the story would be an injustice because the timing that Mr. Stapp chooses to reveal the various pieces of the puzzle make the book all the more exciting leaving you on the edge of your seat. At the obvious level there is a certain heroic mission and the main characters set out honorably complete the mission. While this story is well told and quite intriguing alone, it is the deeper revelations of characters, their pasts, and their fates that make this book a success.

From the ending I am sure that this is just the first in a series of books. I have no idea when the author will finish up the next one. If you do know, then let me know. I can't wait to see what happens next.
