Summary: Beem this book up!
Review: A tremendously disappointing ending to a great Kirk versus the Klingons tale. If this type of anticlimactic fiction means something to you, then run out and sign up for the pain today.

Rating: 2 stars
Summary: Blessedly Brief
Review: I suppose that The Klingon Gambit isn't the worst Trek book out there. After all, I managed to finish it very quickly and, despite some eye-rolling, I didn't mind it while I was reading it. Ultimately, the book is inane and the solution is both obvious and trite.

Summary: A few bright spots in this novel ...or Star Trek season 4
Review: I tried to picture what the crew would look like if they ran for a fourth season. This is a story that would probably fill the schedule if the original series ran another season. The Enterprise comes upon a Klingon vessel orbiting a planet. They are looking for some strange element that drives their life support systems. But in the process they are making havoc with the researchers on the surface.

All of the Enterprise and Klingon crews are acting in an unusual manner. Scotty is tinkering with the engines; Pavel is becoming more hostile toward the Klingons. Standard Star Trek plot device is here. I'd call it a writer's block episode if it were produced for TV.

Summary: Great Short Read
Review: If you are a fan of the classic Star Trek series, then you will enjoy this read. You can hear the original score in your thoughts as you read along. The story combines elements of a military chess match and the core plot of the episode "This Side of Paradise". While duelling with a new Klingon ship, the crew starts to exhibit out-of-character behavior that is affecting the Klingon ship as well. The scripting of the classic characters mimics the typical screenplay of one of the 60's series episodes.

The only reason that I did not give it 5 stars is that the book is exceptionally short. Perhaps the lack of filler is why I liked the book so much.

Summary: A weaker Classic Trek novel effort.
Review: In my reviews of Classic Star Trek novels, it must be understood that I adhere to the original canon
as invisioned by Gene Roddenberry, and not the "Star Trek" universe accepted by Rick Berman and company.

I generally rate a classic novel thus:

Adherence to Canon -- does this novel adhere to the vision of the original Star Trek?

3 stars

Believability (within the confines of 23rd century Star Trek viability) -- is this novel well-plotted and well
written? Can I picture this novel or imagine myself in it?

2 stars

Coherence and Consistency -- does this novel internally consistent? Is it consistent with other Star Trek
novels by the same author? Is it consistent with what is known of the CLASSIC Star Trek universe?

4 stars -- consistent with the author's "Mutiny on the Enterprise"

Mitigating Factors -- pluses or minuses which dramatically affect the enjoyment of this book

Minus one star for very poor ending.

Summary: Historical trek.
Review: The Enterprise is sent to discover what happened to a Vulcan ship's crew that has died while supporting an archaeological dig. They find a Klingon ship in the area when they arrive and everyone on and near the planet starts going crazy. The action and the descriptions in this book are reasonable. The portrayal of the characters could definitely be better, going crazy or not. The description of the Klingons is fairly primitive, but definitely consistent with many later appearances in the Original Series books. Still, there is not enough depth to this that I can honestly recommend it, except to Trek history buffs or dedicated collectors.

Summary: Painful¿
Review: The good news is that it's very short. The bad news is that it is very bad. Clearly, the author does not have a good grasp of the characters or even the Star Trek universe (e.g. they're called "phasers" not "laser guns"). The story has holes in it you could drive a starship through with room to spare. Bearing in mind that all the characters (with the inexplicable exception of Kirk) are supposed to be acting differently due to an alien influence, the story just doesn't track well at all and the ending... well, read it and see for yourself. Unfortunately, some things have to be experienced to be fully understood.
