Rating: Summary: Tremendous Creativity Review: I don't typically read fantasy as they all seem to be cut from the same mold; however Witch Ember caught my curiosity. It was recommended by a fantasy fan who said it was different. Well, he was right.
I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Dark and creative. The languages and games that John creates are well thought out. The characters really come alive as you start to feel yourself following the main character through her travels.
If you want something different. Something a bit out of the norm, this book is for you. If you like the cookie-cutter reads, then this one is for you as well. It'll let you see that there is another side to writing.
Rating: Summary: Great story, very imaginative Review: I was quite impressed by the telling of the tale that was achieved with this book. The author is obviously a very imaginative person as can be seen by the creation of another language for this book as well as some very intriguing games. I would be interested in seeing a full book of rules for Matu-catu. Easy to get lost in this world of fantasy and was one of those books that I looked forward to spending time with each night reading before going to bed. Possibly could've reduced the sexual content in the book some without losing anything on reader appeal.

Rating: Summary: An intricate complex world populated with fascinating charac Review: I've never been a big fan of fantasy books (except of course for the works of JRR Tolkien) because the worlds and characters seems so slapped together, and, often, vehicles for a bunch of boring melodrama with a couple of dragons thrown in to keep the reader reading. John Lawson's Witch Ember is different though. The world is so well thought out, and full of rich complex characters, mythology, history, and magic that it feels like you are reading something that really happened and not just someone's weekend role playing game experiment, or a rehashed retelling of the same ol' junk. Esmeree's growth as a woman and a character really makes the book. She feels real, as do the other characters who populate this world, and the intrigues that come to surround her will not only keep you guessing, they'll keep you reading too.
Rating: Summary: Intelligent captivating adventure. A must read. Review: I've read this book three times now and it never fails to lock me into the story. It's a story with depth and character that you just don't find on the shelves these days. I'd say you're missing one of the best books out there if you haven't picked it up yet.Buy this book, read it, and tell your friends about it. Even better, buy it as a gift and share this wonderful tale. They will thank you for it.
Rating: Summary: Very good read Review: I've read this book twice now and enjoyed it immensely both times. The characters are believable and the story goes by quickly. Before you know it you've hit the end and you're dying to know what comes next for this world and it's characters. I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy books, but I will add, that this is not a story for the faint of heart. The story is gritty and real and still fantasy complete.

Rating: Summary: The Best Damned Fantasy Fiction I've Ever Read! Review: Lawson's command of the language is so impressive that I hardly noticed I was reading a genre I normally find stilted and affected. Did I say "language!" I should have said command of the languageS. The first thing you should know is that Lawson's invention of language and his charcter names are enormously creative and captivating. Since this is probably only the second "fantasy" genre text I've read in its entirety (I read "The Hobbit" back in the early 70s), I almost feel unqualified to comment on his book. But I must say that in spite of the genre, "Witch Ember" is extremely well written with very smooth transitions. And on top of that, Lawson's storytelling skill is excellent. The storyline and its inventiveness held my attention; and I'm the classic Poe scholar--you know, never read anything you can't finish in one sitting. I recommend this book to friends who are into the genre as well as to anyone who appreciates the art of fine writing. If Lawson can hold the focus of an fantasyphobe like me, I guarantee you will find his work a treasure of intellectual and emotional delight.
