Rating: Summary: Slow moving but good historical information Review: As a reader who loved the Diana Gabaldon Outlander series, I was excited to find this historical romance set during the same time period. Unfortunately, I found myself skimming and skipping pages! I hate to give up on a novel, but I just couldn't make it through and read the last chapter to see if there was a happy ending. This may be another case of my expectations for a balance of romance and history, but this was mainly history and little romance. However, if you're looking for detailed descriptions of the time period, this is a great source.
Rating: Summary: Beautiful prose, magnificent research Review: From the first lyrical scene to the last page, LADY OF THE GLEN kept me riveted. I was enthralled by Ms. Roberson's use of all the senses in invoking a sense of time and place, and her ability to draw the reader into the book so effortlessly. Being familiar with the massacre of Glencoe, I marveled at her balance of fact and fiction to create a timeless masterpiece. Bravo! Ms Roberson, for a splendid work
Rating: Summary: Great Scottish Highlander story Review: I checked this book out from the library by just browsing through some Scottish historical fiction. So it was by chance that I discovered it. I loved it and wasn't ready to return it at the due date and so bought my own copy to keep. It's an intriguing story, especially for a Scottish history nut like me. I have researched Culloden and now Glencoe due to historical fiction novels I have read. Am I addicted? Oh, aye.
Rating: Summary: A good read Review: I have never heard of the Glencoe Massacre until I stumbled across "Lady of the Glen" by pure chance. What a gripping read from start to finish! The story between Cat and Alasdair is truly beautiful and involving, and made the facts of an historical event a couple of hundred years ago come alive. I agreed with one viewer saying that this is a heavy historcal book...but the love story seems to fit into the book very well..when you read the book, you feel like you were there too... you feel their sorrow, joy, and anger...this is a book that will have you laughing out loud and crying your eyes out at the same time... all in all, this is a nice book for both romance novel readers and historical book readers...

Rating: Summary: Excellent story, rooted in historical facts Review: I loved this story and wish the author would stay with historical fiction instead of fantasy. The story was rooted in fact, had believable characters, and was terrific to read. It ended in a trip to Scotland for me, so I would go for it.
Rating: Summary: A real nice Historical Fiction Tale. Review: I picked up this book not knowing the story of the Glencoe Massacre but decided to read it because I like Lady of the Forest so much. This book was well written, enjoyable, moving and historically accurate. (After reading the book, I researched the topic!) Anyone who enjoys Scottish Historical Fiction will like this book but I have to admit, Lady of the Forest was my favorite.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing for an old Roberson fan Review: I read 'Lady of the Glen' on the strength of Roberson's earlier fantasy work. I was disappointed. The first thing I noticed about this book was, however, just how much Roberson's writing had improved. I've heard how Marion Zimmer Bradley honed her writing skills on romance stories/erotica, and how this made her later fantasy much more satisfying. Roberson seems to have done it the other way round. Her early work, the Chronicals of the Cheysuli and the Sword-Dancer series, were absolutely seminal fantasy works - particularly the Cheysuli series which I heartily recommend even to non-fantasy lovers. Nontheless, these conceptually brilliant stories sometimes suffered from repetitive, poor writing and plotting. Then she co-wrote the splendid 'Golden Key', which was an absolute piece of genius, a pseudo-historical/romance/fantasy (check it out!). After that, no more fantasy was forthcoming from her talented pen, leaving me and doubtless many more fans to mourn the loss. Out of desperation I turned to this historical romance set in seventeenth century Scotland. It is actually a superb example of its genre, following in the footsteps of her Maid Marian novels. But nevertheless, I found it disappointing that Roberson is not using her increased writing skills to return to Homana! If you are new to Roberson and enjoy historical romance, you will probably be well satisified with this novel. It is reminiscent of Sharon Kay Penman's writing style (I believe Roberson is quite a fan), and that is a complement which any readers of SKP's Plantagenet historical fiction will well appreciate. Lovers of this book may also enjoy Barbara Erskine's historical fantasy (set in medieval Wales and Scotland). If you know Roberson well from her early work, you may be disappointed too, but doubtless you will read this book anyway and enjoy it simply because it is hers.
Rating: Summary: BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ........ Review: I truly beleive that this is what Historical Romance is all about. I have read this book 3 times already and it is in my KEEP shelf for future reading. If I could rate this book any higher, I WOULD. Some reviewers rated this book as slow but I found it just the opposite as I am a true Scottish fan. I just happened upon this book as it had Scottish plaid on the front and I prefer any Author that writes Scottish novels, plus, I have also read a history of Scotland, so I am familiar with the history of the Glencoe Massacre. She had the ability to make you feel that you were at the massacre yourself and could almost experience what they were experiencing at the time. I would love to see a Movie made of this book that would rival "Braveheart".
