Rating: Summary: The Dark is Rising is interestingfor everyone. Review: I read the dark is rising first, not knowing about "Over Sea Under Stone". I then read Over sea Under Stone and am cureently readingthe rest, I have had so much fun with this series. Thanx to Susan Cooper and all she's done for me!!!
Rating: Summary: Yikes Review: There are healthy doses of pagan terror in this sweeping tale, as a young boy's Christmas is ruined when he suddenly is caught up in an epic battle between ancient Celtic good and evil, fraught with memorable images. I actually preferred "Over Sea, Under Stone," which in many ways is a more subtle book. Here, as I suppose magic warrants, the descriptions of what is actually happening get a bit vague. Sometimes it even leaves me frustrated that I haven't spent years studying the original Arthurian myths, but this is a measure of the book's intelligence.
Rating: Summary: The Dark is Rising is the simply the best series I have read Review: The Dark is Rising is a series that everyone should read, more adults than children. It sparks the imagination. Susan Cooper is excellent in developing the characters and the imagery is fantastic. I first read "Over Sea, Under Stone" when I was 11. Now at 17, I have read the books three times, and each time is better than the last. I definitely recommend this series to anyone who loves adventure, mystery, suspence, the King Arthur stories and magic. It is definintely a story that I will never forget.
Rating: Summary: Sense of Wonder Review: Pure magic. These are fabulous books that should be read by everyone. Ms. Cooper's fiction is a thrill and a wonder to read.
Rating: Summary: Sheesh, it's been so long -- but I remembered! Review: I first read this series when I was about age 10 or 11...haven't given it a second thought until tonight, when, for some reason (at age 27), I began to recall this excellent series I read as a child. It took a while to recall just a few keywords of the titles, but when I saw The Dark Is Rising on amazon.com's search results, it sparked! Thanks! I'll be buying the series soon for my nieces!
Rating: Summary: Amazing Review: I first read this book in 4th grade, when, on the weekly library trip with the class, my teacher noticed that I was sitting there, bored, because I had already read most of the books in the library and had no idea where to go from there. She plucked THE DARK IS RISING off the shelf and handed it to me. I read that book front to back in two sittings, and would constantly borrow it from the library. This is the greatest of the Dark is Rising series, along with THE GREY KING, and it's wonderfully written. The background mythology is beautfiully original and structured, the characters are wonderfully drawn, and basically everything about this book is amazing. I finally got my own copy of this book when my boyfriend bought the boxed set for our anniversary, which I specifically asked for because I decided that other children deserved to read the local library copy. I still haven't brought myself to finish SILVER ON THE TREE after all these years, the last book in the series, because I'm dreading the end of this wonderfully crafted story.
Rating: Summary: Magically Inspirational!!! Review: When I was in seventh grade, I saw a friend reading The Dark is Rising. I quickly went to the library to look for a copy, and sure enough, I found all the books from the sequence. I was absorbed into Over Sea, Under Stone, and within 2 years I read all five of the books. Ever since that time, I have been inspired to write stories of other worldly adventures full of fantasy, fright, and magic. It lead me to love the English history and culture in which the novels are set. Thank You Susan Cooper! I loved your books, and no others have surpassed them. I do plan on reading them again!
Rating: Summary: it was a great thriller and was awsome! Review: When I read this book I was amazed by it and it made me feel like I was right there with Will on all of his great adventures!
Rating: Summary: Amazing, utterly amazing Review: A thrilling book. Just at aw at how susan writes. Fabulous. The other books in the series are teh same: wonderously fantastic. There aren't enough words to write about it.
Rating: Summary: Enthralling ! Review: I discovered TDIR (along with the rest of the series) sometime during the Seventies, when I was in my twenties. I am now 46, and have read the book several times, always around Christmastime. Not only does the subject matter fascinate me, but the writing is absolutely beautiful ! I consider the story a treasure and expect to enjoy it many more times. I wish I could thank Ms. Cooper in person.
