Summary: Will be in the library for my kids some day.
Review: Although many people seem to have discovered Susan Cooper around the age of 10, these books have themes and stories that stay with you through your life. The characters are great, and the series is entertaining. But even more compelling (for me, at least!) is the idea that one person could be chosen as a warrior for the "light" and have the power to shift the balance in a fight between good and evil. The choices Will and his friends make aren't all that different from choices we make ourselves everyday, and here you see how their decisions really do make a difference. It's a good introduction to the importance of morality for kids, much like C.S. Lewis's "Wardrobe" series.

I still read these every now and then, and sent the set to my cousin for his 10th birthday. An all-time favorite!

Summary: This is one of my favorite books.
Review: I first stumbled across Susan Cooper's books when writing a book report in 4th grade. I read one and liked it so much I rushed out to read the others! I read and reread them all, this one especially. Now, 11 years after I first read it, it remains one of my all-time favorite books. I would recommend it to anyone of any age.

Summary: The Dark is Rising is brilliantly intriguing, a work of art.
Review: Susan Cooper belongs in a category with C.S. Lewis and Tolkien. There is no going back until you have finished reading this book. It will grab your attention, holding you captive in an iron grip until the very last word. As you enter the world of Will Stanton, where Dark disguises itself as Light and a strange quest is the only hope of triumph, you will find yourself drawn into the conflict. Because time is running out. And the Dark is rising.

Summary: I haven't read the other books, but this book is a must!
Review: This book is the must of The Dark Is Rising sequence because it explains all that is to come in the later books. If not read, the rest of the sequence will baffle you. The book is also filled with exciting scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Summary: THE BOOK THAT SHAPED MY LIFE
Review: DURING MY FORMATIVE YEARS I HAD THREE BEST FRIENDS WHO SHARED THE EXPERIENCE OF GROWING UP WITH ME. THE DARK IS RISING CAME TO ME IN THE FORM OF A BOOK REPORT MY FRIEND HAD COMPOSED. I READ THE BOOK AS SOON AS I COULD GET MY HANDS ON IT. WE THEN BEGAN TO CONSIDER OURSELVES AS THE THREE FROM THE CIRCLE. TO THIS DAY WE STILL BELIEVE WE ARE MEMBERS OF THE LIGHT IN A CONSTANT STRUGGLE TO FIGHT THE FORCES OF THE DARK. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ADULTS AS WELL AS ADOLESCENTS. TILL ALL SHALL FIND THE LIGHT AT LAST, SILVER ON THE TREE.

Summary: A classic for readers of all ages
Review: Well, the subject line sums it up; this is one great book, in a series of five great books. I first read them in 4th grade, and recently was reminded of the series.

I remembered that I don't have them, came here to order them so I could have them in my collection, and figured I ought to review them as well...

Get these books. You won't be disappointed.

Summary: The Best I've Ever Read
Review: 'When the dark comes rising, Six shall turn it back, Three from the elements, Three from the track. Iron for the birthday, Bronze carried long, Wood from the burning, Stone out of song, Fire from the candle ring, Water from the thaw, Six signs the circle, and the grail gone before.' This book is truly wonderful. I couldn't put it down!

Summary: spine-tingling and heartwarming
Review: Unlike most reviewers on this page, I did not read these books until (relative) adulthood: freshman year in college, during Christmas vacation. I've sometimes been glad I didn't find them earlier, as I would have had nightmares about innocent-looking farm girls and Welsh housewives who turn out to be tools of the Dark. I read a lot of YA fiction and this is the only series I've found so far which never feels like a knockoff of other fantasy stories (particularly fantasy influenced by Arthurian legend). The books are tightly crafted, with every character, every fragment of Celtic legend, and every line of dialogue carefully connected. There is no filler, there are no holes in the story, and everything seems believable and mystical at the same time. This is the kind of story that you believe had to have "really happened," because it's impossible to believe that any individual author could have just made it up.

Summary: One of the best books for adolescents ever written.
Review: This is less of a review that a testimonial. I read all of Susan Cooper's books when I was a young girl. I am 32 now and about to have my first child. I have been looking for the series in books stores so I could make sure that my child would have the chance to read them. And I might just read them again. After 20 years, I still remember the feelings the books evoked. The thrill, the fear, the relief and the excitement when good won out over evil. And the hero is a kid so children can identify and realize that they can make a difference. A wonderful set of books, and I am glad I finally found them

Summary: Cooper once again creates a magical book!
Review: In the 2nd of Cooper's series she tells the story of Will Stanton, the last of the Old Ones. A group of people with powers beyond normal humans. By completing the circle of the Old Ones Will is required to find the Six Signs. This story is his quest for them
