Summary: Great Book!
Review: This is one of the best books ever written! I loved it. I was at once lost in England with Will Stanton and was able to forget where I was. This is by far the best in the entire series. I first found this book at the library and read it before Over Sea, Under Stone. I think that all readers should read it first. I'm 15 years old and it's hard to find good books to read so I'm really glad she wrote the whole series. I just wish they weren't classified as children's books. They're good for all ages. This book and the others will be in my library for years to come.

Summary: Wonderful!
Review: To be compared to L'Engle, Tolkien, Lewis, and Stephen Lawhead

Summary: Masterful, beautiful, and ingenious!
Review: Cooper does it again in her second in the Dark is Rising series. The journey of young Will Stanton, last of the force known as the Light, proves to be a thrilling and powerful tale of good verses evil and the struggle for a boy to accept his destiny and be responsible for the things he does. Powerful and emotional, this story will have you on the edge of your seat withe very twist and turn in its plot.

Summary: Wow
Review: Iron for the Birthday, Bronze carried long, Wood from the burning, Stone out of song, Fire from the Candle-Ring, Water from the thaw. Will Stanton discovers on his eleventh brithday that he is the last of the Old Ones, an ancient race of immortals dedicated to protecting the Earth from the malice of the rising Dark. Will must obtain the Six Signs - Iron, Bronze, Wood, Stone, Fire and Water - whilst at the same time discovering the true ways of the Old Ones. But will the Walker let him take the Second Sign, and will the Black Rider let him succeed? For the Wallker is abroad, and the Rider is riding, they have woken, the Dark is Rising . . .

This book, the second in Susan Cooper's amazing fantasy sequence, The Dark is Rising, concentrates much more on magic than the first book, Over Sea, Under Stone. People say that you should read this book before the first, but in this book we learn of the hazards that Merriman Lyon (Great-Uncle Merry from the first book) must have taken with trusting the three children with the task of obtaining the Grail. Because in this book we learn that for the Light to trust an ordinary human is to risk destroying the Light and the four Quests . . .

Summary: Too Scary!
Review: I read the reviews about this book and really wanted to read it. Well, I hate to ruin this books reputation, but I have to tell the truth. I think this book is too scary. I only got to the second chapter and I'm already getting nightmares. It may get better along the way, but it just doesn't draw me in.

Summary: Great start to a great series
Review: I first read this series about 10 years ago and loved it then. Now, way past the "young adult" stage, I still find it enjoyable. Cooper, like Lloyd Alexander, writes for people of all ages. This isn't as impressive as her "Seaward" but it helps lead off one of the best fantasy series. Highly recommended for people of all ages.

Summary: Wolrd Absorbing Fantasy on par with Tolkien, C.S. Lewis
Review: This is one of the books of the series, but the first real start to what should surely be a classic of children's writting. It's most suitible for pre-teens (10+) as it's involoving, detailed and increadibly fasinating, but not 'cute' and a bit scary at times. It's classic good vs. evil, done with finese, skill and the best plot I've seen in a children's book. Never talks down, and is based solidly on Celtic lore, which gives it a depth this 20 year old can still read and enjoy!! ***A MUST BUY FOR YOUR OLDER CHILD!***

Summary: One of the best of an essential series
Review: It's amazing how much stuff is compared to Lewis, Tolkien, and L'Engle. In this case, though, the comparisons really are valid. The best of children's literature discusses good vs evil in terms too direct for the jaded taste and easy embarassment of most adults; fantasy especially lends itself to cosmic issues.

The Dark is Rising certainly ranks among those best books, and this may be the best in the series (with still competition from The Grey King and Silver on the Tree). Some idea of the impact of this series may be conveyed by the fact that I can still recite, from memory, all the poem/prophecies in the series.

Summary: Wow
Review: As you and I have probably noticed, The Dark is Rising has gotten all five stars for everyone. And if you have read it, you will know why. All I can say is that Susan Cooper has completely wowed me with her writing. It is so exciting, thrilling, scary, sorry I can't think of other words but it is such a great book that I guarentee that you will go out and buy the rest of the series right away.
