Rating: Summary: Wonderful, dark and atmospheric novel. Review: Katharine Eliska Kimbriel has outdone herself yet again. Alfreda, her young heroine, is a reluctant trainee in the arts of the practitioner - herbcraft, magic and knowledge of supernatural forces. A must-read for any Pagan or anyone interested in the supernatural! Great portrayal of magic as a living force, in a Goddess-sympathetic setting. Alfreda must reconcile her Christian faith with the knowledge of an older power that exists to protect her against the forces of darkness. This is the "prequel" to "Kindred Rites", another excellent Kimbriel book.
Rating: Summary: A must-read for Dark Fantasy Lovers, a Seriously GOOD Read Review: Kimbriel has a true jewel here. Strong characters, good plot, a consistently strong writing style with passages that will truly delight you. An artful blending of mountain lore, myth and lifestyle with dark fantasy elements. I loved the protagonist, Allie, and could hardly wait for the sequel, even though this book can be read as a stand-alone. A young woman comes of age in a tough world---send your teen readers here instead of the latest horror title-- it has enough terror to keep anyone interested, but it has more, much more than the usual horror pulp.
Rating: Summary: Spooky but a tad too slow moving Review: Night Calls is a spooky, atmospheric tale about a young girl coming of age amongst werewolves, vampires and other assorted supernatural frights. The story begins when werewolves invade the young heroine's life and she learns that she has a "gift" for dealing with these beings. She begins a quest to learn all that she can to save those she loves from the creatures of the night. Written in a low key style with muted violence Night Calls is a good choice for younger readers and for those who don't enjoy in-your-face violence. The pace was a bit too slow for my tastes, and all too often I found my eyes glazing over when the minuet details of the heroine's life got out of control. Still, it was a sufficiently eerie story written with emotion and I immediately liked the spunky and outspoken heroine.

Rating: Summary: Night Calls - an awesome exploration of dark possibilities. Review: Night Calls pulled me into the story almost immediately, and was a gripping experience through to the end. I hope there will be more opportunities to find out what happens in the
world Ms. Kimbriel has created. The werewolf comes to the village, and causes terror. A young family must make difficult choices between personal and community welfare. The terror of werewolves, vampires and other supernatural forces of evil are balanced by forces
of light, and choices lead on into further challenges that
pull the reader along. The phenomena are described simply
and believably, a part of daily life, chillingly real. The pull between good and evil is not delivered as a sermon, and each choice matters to the reader as the story progresses.
I found the book fascinating, as did my elder son, a fantasy
addict. The twelve-year old found it a little too frightening,
but plans to return to it some time when he is older.
Rating: Summary: Best book I've ever read!!! Review: Out of all the books I've ever read in the 18 years of my life, this is the best one. The author kept me in suspense, and I was never able to put the book down, and when I did, I couldn't wait until I could read another one.
Rating: Summary: An adult LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE with Werewolves! Review: This dark fantasy is set in the American Colonial Period, and begins the story of Alfreda, a young woman gifted with the Second Sight who will be taught herb lore and magic by the wizards of the Michigan Territory. Rich in characterization and atmosphere, this is a coming-of-age tale for lovers of werewolf and vampire stories. If you liked the "John the Balladeer" books of Manly Wade Wellman, or Orson Scott Card's "Alvin Maker" series, you'll probably like NIGHT CALLS
Rating: Summary: This is one of the best books I've ever read.. Review: When I first picked up this book, I got it because the cover looked nice and I was desperate for something to read. I've just read it for the 10th time now, and it's just as good as the first time. I simply love this book, and hope the author makes more books about Alfreda. I love her!
