Rating: Summary: Shatner's Book Review: I think it was/is wonderful! William Shatner is a terrific writer!
Rating: Summary: A True Captain's Log Review: It is widely accepted that Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, is the weakest film in the series, to feature the original series cast. I would agree with that assertion. Although, given TNG films, Insurrrection and Nemesis, and their horrorible contributions to the series, in retrospect The Final Frontier seems to hold up better than those movies. As the film gets an upgraded 2 disc DVD release, I thought it might be the right time to revisit this book, written by Shatner's daughter LizabethCaptain's Log chronicles director William Shatner's path as filmmaker and what it took to bring the film to the big screen. The film may have its share of problems, but I have to say that I liked the book, more the second time around. I was surprised at just how honest everyone was. Of particular interest was Lizabeth's interview with the late Trek creator Gene Roddenbery. Mr. Roddeberry discusses his issues with the story and talks about his meetings with Shatner and Producer Harve Bennett. It was not easy going. A prolonged writers strike in tinstletown, budget woes, sub par effects and cast concerns are all brought into focus. In going through the book it was pretty clear to me, why the film didn't meet expectations, of fans and critics alike. This is a fairly smug free look at an actor turned director. The movie is what it is and the book lays it all out. The book has 16 pages of behind the scenes photos and an author's introduction and her thoughts on the whole Trek deal. Given the film's lackluster box office I just wish the book hadn't ended with the advance screening. I guess that's what the DVD extras are for. The 224 page book is recommended for anyone interested in how films are made-good and bad.
