Summary: Interesting
Review: A well written, different elf story. I very much enjoyed the twist of mystery.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Very well written!
Review: I always found myself shying away from most elf books, but after reading a few pages of Jerlayne, I was mesmerized and had to take it home. I spent most of the weekend reading and then reflecting on the different twists and turns I read and in the end found it all fascinating.

As a younger reader, I find it sometimes difficult to find a good fantasy book that grabs my attention and keeps me reading, but this was a keeper, though at times I would puzzle over situations.

I praise Ms. Abbey's imaginative ideas and style and hope to read another of her books sometime soon.

Summary: Not Tolkien's elves, nor anyone else's, these elves are mine
Review: I never imagined I'd do an elf book. I thought everything that could be said about the species probably had already been said... twice. Then Martin Greenberg challenged me to write a *different* short story about elves and mortals.

I went to bed that night muttering that no such story could be written and, in a way, I was right because what I had in mind the next morning was a novel. I turned it into a short story for Marty (it was published in ELF FANTASTIC), then spent the next two years turning my idea back into a novel about elves, goblins; mortals and immortals; the curses of iron, AIDS and demographics; and my old hometown: New York City.

The result is a bit of the GUARDIANS, a bit of SIEGE OF SHADOWS, and -- in my biased opinion -- better than anything I've written before.

Summary: You Can't Put This Book Down--It's WONDERFUL!
Review: I read the original short story, and was startled to pick up a random book and realize that I'd already read something about it. This is one of the better books I've read in a long time. It's not a short book, but I read it in 48 hours (on christmas break), then immediately picked it back up to read through my favorite scenes again and make sure I hadn't missed anything. The characters are richly drawn, the book has plenty of action, and the world is different from anything else while still reminding you of the best of classic high fantasy. I found myself searching bookstores for a copy to give to my friend so I could have someone to discuss it with. My only problem was wishing Jerlayne would give up her husband for Goro, who is much more interesting and caring (read it-you'll understand). Buy this book. Now!

Summary: I LIKE!
Review: I think this was a very good book. I usually get bored not even half way through with most books over 400 pages, but this one kept my interest nearly the whole way through! The only thing I would change is the cussing, and I think it would have been cool if Goro and Jerlyane got into it more, for some reason I didnt really like her husbands character. I love how she portraid goblins. Whenever you think of them you see some nasty, short thing. But not these. They look just about the same as humans, besides the fact their blue! I love how they move through shadows! Anyhow, it was a fantastic book, well done Mrs. Abbey!

Summary: Boring, Plodding, and Tiresome
Review: I usually can read a 500 page novel in about 4 days. Jerlayne took me over 2 weeks - and I really pushed myself to finish!

This book had very little explaination about how/why certain things were happening. I felt like I was reading the second book in a series the entire time. The characters were totally uninteresting - even the title character Jerlayne was a bore. I had no sympathy to anyone in this book because they were 2-dimentional sadsacks. I would have liked to read more about the relationships between the characters instead of being told "they loved each other." I wish we would have been shown more than told.

If you like books that are about having children and housework, by all means, read Jerlayne.

If you like books that have a smooth plot, interesting/believable relationships, and intelligence please, read something else.

Summary: A Fantasy Novel You'll Never Stop Wanting to Read
Review: Jerlayne was a fantastic novel. It took me almost 2 weeks, maybe less. this book had millions of twists & turns. Once you thought you knew something for sure, it'd change like that. There's so many lies in this book, also. It's very imagative how elves are born. Cuz is very funny in this book. Time goes fast in this book & the mortal realm changes fast. I can't believe Jerlayne [interacts with] a goblin, who's blue! It's a krazy story. Plus Aulaudin never gets angry at Jerlayne for cheating on him. If you love fantasies with romance & comedy then you should read Jerlayne. I couldn't stop turning the pages. It was so interesting & thrilling. It kept me at the edge of my seat. It's 1 book i'll read again in the future. There better be a second or something like it soon!

Summary: Engrossing
Review: Jerlayne was a really interesting book. Anyone could believe that Lynn Abbey had actually been to Faerie before, her descriptions are so fabulous. But besides that, the story is great. I'm 15, and I was reading while on vacation. My mom had to drag me out of the stateroom on the ship. Once you start, you just want to keep going. Unfortunately, since this was a pretty long book, that's nearly impossible. But seriously, if you're even the slightest bit interested in fantasy-or even if you're not-read this book. It's not a sugar-spun fairy tale- there's longing, hardship, death, sadnesses, heart-wrenching choices, and real characters. It has a strong plot with plenty-PLENTY of unexpected twists. Read it~

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Slow-moving
Review: Personally, I though this book was a disappointment. It doesn't move along, and the scenes are boring, without much action. The descriptions are good, but in this story there isn't much to describe. Sorry, for all you out there that like this story. I enjoy a fantasy story with lots of action, sword-fighting, magic, rescues. I don't like this book much because it doesn't have too much of that.

Seriously, though, don't just take my word for it. You need to read this book for yourself, and draw your own conclusions.
