Rating: Summary: Whirlwind, while creepy, is nothing new. Review: As is the case with most prolific writers, segments of Charles Grant's second (and to date final) X-File novel Whirlwind seems to share a great deal of sequences/ideas from other novels he has written, most notably his very first novel The Curse, one of his Oxrun Station books entitled The Bloodwind, and his unique Carrie riff The Pet. Despite those weaknesses the book had enough eerie moments to keep me flipping pages as fast as I could to Grant novel's trademarked ambiguous ending. Series fans will no doubt want to check it out, but Goblins was a lot more fun.
Rating: Summary: I thought it was fantastic Review: Charles L. Grant is a terrific author and Whirlwind has an imaginitive plot. The author catches everything and it makes you feel like you were there. He was very good at capturing Mulder's humor. The X-Files rocks.
Rating: Summary: It was confusing and the plot was weak Review: Confusing seems to be the right word for this novel. All through it, I was constantly wondering "What happened?" and "When did this occur?". I found myself flipping back to find out what happened. The plot itself was choppy. It jumped from one thing to another without an understanding given to the reader of what just happened. After I finished it, all I got was that a)Mulder and Scully found some form of conclusion to it. b)someone else had died. c)Mulder had some bizarre theory and once again, Scully shot it down with rationalism. I didn't feel like reading it again. I thought "Why bother? I just wouldn't get it again."
Rating: Summary: So far, the best X-Files novel. Review: Having read all the X-Files novels, this is, so far, the best. A must have for all "Philes." Probably not as riviting for those who aren't fans. While I sometimes found myself skipping the parts Scully and Mulder weren't in, it's an easy read with nice description. Also an interesing premise. Something that would be hard to do on the show. Therefore, great for one's imagination.
Rating: Summary: Ho-hum Review: Hey, if you remember the episode where the prisoner is caught in a tornado and then is able to wreck revenge on those he felt wronged him by scouring their bodies with the tornado, you probably don't need to read the book. There are too many similarities in plot to ignore. To be fair, Grant wrote the book long before the episode aired but the X-file clearly overlaps. There are a couple of very good Mulder and Scully descriptions that are right on target though. However in the end, the "monster" in this book is a bit too similar to the one seen on the show.
Rating: Summary: Creepy... Review: I don't usually like spin-off books but I picked this up at an airport before a long flight and I was surprised because it was actually a pretty good book...you probably wouldn't enjoy it if you don't follow the show, but if you do, it captures the real atmosphere of the TV series. Despite a bit of a slow start, haunting...and after having caved and read two of the other Kevin Anderson/Charles Grant books I'd definitely say this one was the best.
Rating: Summary: A real improvement for Mr Grant Review: I found this book more enjoyable then Mr. Grants first book, Goblins. This one was much more even and understandable. His portrayal of Mulder and Scully was a little more on the money in this novel. His books still aren't as well done as Kevin J. Anderson's, but they are still pretty enjoyable.
Rating: Summary: WEAK PLOT AND POOR PACE MAKE THIS SOMETHING TO SKIP Review: I like Grant's writing style and thought that he did a great job with Goblins. While the book has some similar style to Goblins, it falls way short and I was left with an unsatisfied feeling after finishing the book. Terrific idea, great setting (Southwest USA) but this comes across like a Hillerman wannabe...the ending was very poor and not enough development to the characters left a confusing and unsettling conclusion.
Rating: Summary: Great! Amazing! Review: I love the last few chapters and the only reason I gave it only four stars is beacause the beging is sorta outta character but, the rest is great! It is gory just so you know. But at least it is not on screen.
Rating: Summary: Great book-kept me glued to the pages! Review: I loved this book and how well it was written. It really kept you guessing as to who controlled the Blood Wind! There were funny parts, which I liked, and the characters-Mulder and Scully as well as the Indians and the sheriff-were written very well. Only one thing wrong-why did Mulder and Scully think it was so hot in New Mexico? Sure, it can get hot, but I live in Arizona and it doesn't get THAT hot.
