Rating: Summary: A Time Capsule For The Original Series Review: Author David Gerrold gives readers a no holds barred look at the Star Trek phenomenon's first 18 years. The World Of Star Trek was last revised in 1984, prior to the the theatrical release of the the third feature film, The Search For Spock. Going back through the book recently, made me realize, just how special the first 18 years of this once giant space saga actually was. Since this book represents one of the earliest looks at classic Trek, it's an even more treasured volume now, then when I first read it. Given the fact that "modern" Trek is nothing more than a mere shadow of it's former self, this book gives us a unique perspective, that producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga should learn from and use in the current incarnations. The fact that Gerrold was there almost from the start and wrote the classic episode The Trouble With Tribbles, makes the book authoritative. The book is not a sanitized version of events, but rather an honest look at how, despite many obstacles, Trek thrived. Gerrold's book is filled with great stories about the series from cast and crew. He also looks at fandom. Both its lighter and darker sides. As the original cast and crew grow older and leave us, Gerrold's book becomes more poniant. The book has a few black and white photos and 209 pages. If you are a classic trekker, and haven't read this book before, find a copy and do so, it's worth it.
