Rating: Summary: Get out the tissues Review: After I'd put away the Kleenex, I ran to the bookstore to find a way to focus on someone else's drama other than my own. This was not the book. I was easily pulled into the storyline, not simply because I knew the locale; EJD has a writing style that is smooth, rythmic and realistic. The characters were well developed, could've been anyone you know, and I found myself getting particularly p'o'ed at some of the choices made by Shelby, one of the main characters. Throughout the book, I laughed, I got mad, took long walks down memory lane, and ultimately cried my eyes out focusing on someone else's drama. I have one complaint though: there isn't enough of his work out there yet. I want more. And one suggestion if you're there, Mr. Dickey: please don't mention real people's names. They just might be the one your reader is trying to forget.
Rating: Summary: All THAT! Review: This book was so funny, I was reading while I was at work. My co-workers kept looking around at me to see if I lost my mine, I was laughing so hard. When I finish reading the book I went straight to my nearest bookstore and damm near brought everything by this magnificent author.
Rating: Summary: maaaaaaarvelous Review: I first read Cheaters and I was so overwhelmed by Mr. Dickeys work that I went out and bought all of his book. I read Sister Sister, Friends and Lovers, and I've just finished Milk in My Coffee. I get so caught up in the characters it's crazy. All I have to say is mover over E, Lynn Harris, there is a New Sherriff in town.
Rating: Summary: I Loved This Man Review: I think this was one of the best books this man has written. He writes so well,Every chapter had me waiting on the next. The characters were so real I damn near cryed about what happened to Debra and Leonard. And when Shelby and Tyrel finally realized what was real, I was so happy I closed the book in ahhhhhh.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book yet to come Review: I HAVE NEVER READ ANYTHING MY AN AUTHOR AS REAL, TALENTED, AND OFF-THE-HOOK FUNNY LIKE ERIC JEROME DICKEY. HIS WORDS ARE SOOO REAL, WHENEVER I READ ANY BOOK OF HIS..THE PORTRAYAL OF EACH CHARACTER SEEMS SO REAL...I COULD ACTUALLY SEE THROUGH HIS WORDS. I'VE READ AND LOVE ALL OF HIS BOOKS..BUT FRIENDS AND LOVERS IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE..
Rating: Summary: A riveting love story Review: I liked this book much better than the author's first effort, "Sister, Sister" mainly because there was more balance among the characters. In Debra, at last we see Mr. Dickey create a normal, likeable female character instead of his usual shrews and witches. Not to say that there are not some horrible women in this book, there certainly are, but at least Dickey made the effort to give us a sane female character. There is finally someone for which you can root. This is the story of two female best friends falling in love with two male best friends. Debra & Leonard and Shelby & Tyrel. It can be difficult when one set of friends gets involved with another set of friends because if things don't work out you have to choose. And the author provides some realistic examples of that situation. I enjoyed this book because it's not one of those fairytale love stories. Making a relationship work is tough, and we glimpse some of that in this book when two of the characters move in together and try to peacefully co-exist. This book shows how misunderstandings can be amplified and can completely transform our lives because there is one simple exchange that sets in motion the unraveling of Tyrel and Shelby's romance. Tyrel was an interesting character. On the surface, he seems like a heartless womanizer but later on in the story we see that he is using these women ("the transitional team") to try to fill a void in his life. I could definitely relate when he said that he never expected to have to keep starting over in his relationships when he was 30. In a real relationship rather than one of his hit and runs, Tyrel was romantic and thoughtful. He made up little poems with his girlfriend's name and left notes in her purse. And later on he tells her that he would always love her even after she married another man. Shelby was rude and brash and worst of all, she lead another man on when she knew that she didn't want him. My one complaint about this book, and the reason why I didn't give it 5 stars, is the author's failure to provide a better sense of chronology. We jump from Debra and Leonard getting engaged before his career took off and then next thing you know they're married and he's a major star. Then Tyrel and Shelby jump from casual dating to shacking up. And later I had no idea about how long the couple had been apart before they reunite under tragic circumstances. I couldn't tell how long the lapses in time were supposed to have been -- months or years. But on the whole this was a very good book, and I enjoyed every word. I've read 4 of Dickey's books so far. This one and "Cheaters" are my favorites.
Rating: Summary: mmm-mmm-mmm! Review: i have to say that eric jerome dickey out did himself AGAIN! i thought Sister Sister had it going on, but he put Friends and Lovers on another level! Shoot, i'm currently majoring in computer science, with a minor in creative writing, but i might have to switch it around! this brother was working it front to back. but on a serious note, i was really feeling the characters in this book. seeing chiquita brought back (a main character in Sister Sister), although i was unhappy with her choice of relationship, was good. but, i must say that shelby reminded me a lot of myself; her whole attitude, and persona towards men and life had me rolling throughout the book. and debra reminded me of one of my close friends, with her down to earth, motherly type vibe, her and leonard made a really cute couple. all in all, it was really sad how the book ended, but then again, that's just how life is sometimes, which only added to the element of keeping the story real and believable. i learned that you just can't stop true, meant-to-be-together love, and that sometimes, love is the only thing that keeps you sane on an otherwise bad day. pick this book up and support an outstanding african-american author. you won't be sorry, you'll be hooked on every last word, yet again, i guarantee it!
Rating: Summary: Tomorrow is Not Promised To Anyone.... Review: This is my second EJD book and I'm already starting my third (Liars Game). What do you want from a relationship? What are you willing to bring to a relationship? What do you end up with? Friends and Lovers answers these questions and does it in a fashionable, funny, real and witty way. I truly enjoyed reading about the relationship between Tyrel and Shelby, but Leonard and Debra will make you melt. I admit, I'm a sucker for a good love story. The twist in the book hit me like a rock had me drop tears, before I realized...hey, this is fiction.
Rating: Summary: New fan Review: I just finished reading my 3rd book from EJD!! I love his style. I love the flow of his books.. I am so hooked on him. I thought Liar's Game was my favorite, but Friend's and Lovers definitley has my vote! Mr.Dickey keep writing and I will keep reading!!
Rating: Summary: THIS HAS BECOME MY FAVORITE Review: ERIC HAS DONE IT AGAIN BUT EVEN BETTER!!! I thought I give my first line a shout out cause thats how I feel about the book. I admire these people in all kinds of ways.Tyrel is one hot suave man that you need to know about and when Shelby got into his life it was like a rollar coster ride that you couldn't get enough of. But in between the lifes of Tyrel and Shelby there this one character by the name Raymond which you would grow to find so pathic and get under your skin at times. I have truly admire the relationship between Leonardo and Debra. Thier the type of couple that you wish you were in. At the end or shall I say towards the end there has been an unbelivable twist which you wouldn't even imagine or at least expected. This book is truly a go getter, for those who don't have it please do.
