Rating: Summary: wonderful Review: I HAVEN'T READ A BOOK THIS GOOD IN A LONG TIME!!! IT'S ABOUT TIME THAT BLACK MEN WERE SHOWN IN A POSITIVE LIGHT!! AS A BLACK WOMEN I GREATLY APPRECIATE THE EFFORT!! KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK MR. DICKEY!
Rating: Summary: A must read Review: It hard to come back after writing a book as good as "Sister, Siter" but Mr. Dickey did just that. I first thought this would be a repeat book about relationships but was I surprised by the wit and the sensitivity protrayed in this book. It takes a true talent to take fictional characters and bring them to life as Mr. Dickey does in "Friends and Lovers". From the very first page I felt as if I had a front row seat as the lives of Tyrel, Shelby, Leonard and Debra were played out in front of me. Mr. Dickey keep writing!
Rating: Summary: Enthralling. Entertaining. Exceptional. Realistic. Review: As an author, I read quite a few novels. I found "Friends and Lovers" to be a most unexpected treat. Not unexpected in the sense that I was surprised by Mr. Dickey's writing ability. He is an incredible writer. The unexpected delight of this book is its ability to hold you in a visegrip-like spell, sucking you into the lives of these characters, and not letting you go until you are exhausted at the end. As I mentioned, I read an enormous number of books, yet I read this book as though I was starved. I became Tyrel, Shelby, Leonard and Debra. The characters are so real, their situations so tangible and relative, that you wonder how this man (Eric Jerome Dickey) is able to capture the sentiments of both genders with such accuracy and ease. This book will blow you away!! Read it. You'll become addicted to this author...without a doubt!!
Rating: Summary: An author whose genius should take him to the top FAST Review: In Los Angeles, Tyrel (a computer executive) and his best friend Leonard (a stand-up comedian) meet two women, Debra (a nurse) and Shelby ( a flight attendant). Tyrel with Shelby, and Leonard with Debra immediatley hit it off and love flourishes between the two couples. Soon, Leonard and Debra begin to discuss marriage, however a misunderstanding breaks up the other pair. While Leonard and Debra happily marry, Tyrel flees to San Francisco and Shelby runs off to San Diego. In spite the fact that they love each other, it appears that Tyrel and Shelby have no future together. FRIENDS AND LOVERS is a great relationship drama that highlights the yuppie African-American scene in Southern California. As difficult as it seems to have four bright stars in one novel, all four characters feel so genuine, they could be neighbors. Eric Jerome Dickey (author of the acclaimed SISTER, SISTER) shows, in his second novel, that he is a writer on the way to the top of the profession, with a book that not only transcends genre but defines it. Rating: Summary: THE BOMB! Review: "Friends and Lovers" is my absolute favorite book of all times! I absolutely loved it. Before I bought the book, I hadn't read many books by African American authors, much less authors that were men. Terry McMillian was the only one. When I went away to college a fellow student asked me why I only read books by white authors? I didn't have a good excuse, so I set out to read and support African American literature. I was at the bookstore buying a book when I saw "Sister Sister" I thought of my friends words and bought the book. I tore that book up in about 4 hours! *lol* I went back to the bookstore the next day to get "Friends and Lovers" but it wasn't out yet. I had to keep re-reading "Sister Sister" I finally did get "Friends and Lovers", and it was worth my wait. I finished "Friends and Lovers" the same night. It was such a good book. Debra, Shelby, Leonard, and Tyrell were like people I knew. I passed the book on to my 15 year old brother, who in turn passed it on to our mother. We all love it! I just got finished reading "Milk in my Coffee" and I loved that too! Eric Jerome Dickey can do no wrong when it comes to telling a story!
Rating: Summary: The Best of the Best Review: This book was very good. I would love to see this on screen. It makes you cry, laugh and wonder all at once. This is a very good book and I enjoyed reading it. I've read this book, "Friends and Lovers" and "Milk in My Coffee" and the next book that I want to read is "CHEATERS". I can't wait to get my hands on it. Dickey is a very good writer who tells the story from all views (women and men) and after you finish you will not believe that a MAN wrote this book from mainly a woman's point of veiw. He is just multi talented and should get a Grammy or something. He's just outstanding. Words can't express how good of an writer Eric is. If he can write this good I would like to see his Stand-Up comedy or go back to middle school and watch him teach. Buy it and read it for your self. Believe me when I say it that it is worth it.
Rating: Summary: Play Review: I read this book a few years ago, but when I went to see the play yesterday (phenomenal, beautiful, talented cast with an extremely funny performance), then I remembered the book. The woman who played Lisa was exactly right for the part of a conniving and vulnerable woman who wanted a stable man in her life. The comedian in the play and book made me do a back story on EJD to find out that he was a comedian before (and that was obvious).
I remember Chiquita as ghetto, but the girl who played her made me cry laughing so she may have been funny in the book. The comedian in the play who played Chiquita's love/hate interest was as funny on Comic View as he was in this play. (I love the Scrabble scene).
I do remember the characters that Leon (ooh wee!) and Melvin King (speechless) played in the book and that was pure entertainment. Leon's character refused to be married but wanted someone special and King's character just wanted someone to love. But all the back n' forth relationships of a marriage gone bad, another one starting, a fatal accident occurring, friendships walking on a tight rope, and lies wrapped with a heartfelt mound of comedy, made this play and the book an excellent watch and read.
Rating: Summary: I ALMOST CRIED! Review: This has to be my favorite book by EJD this book was funny, romantic, heart warming and much more. This book was filled with suprises some I enjoyed, others that made me wanna cry! But let me not tell the book. I couldn't put this book down even if I wanted to! I carried it everywhere always wondering what would happen next and when I was finished I wished that I had 300 more pages to go! It was just that good!
Rating: Summary: Awesome awesome!! Review: Best book written by Eric!! Shelby rocks!!
