Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: I actually liked the sequel better than the origional, all though perhaps that is because I read them in the reverse order. It was great fun to watch the street rat try and transform into a wizard and a lady. I also must admit that I liked the ending, even though it was some what predictable. Patricia C. Wrede has a knack for developing such vibrant characters full of life. I hope that this will not be the last book in the series. Read this book.
Rating: Summary: For all who asked, "What Happens Next!?" Review: I had first found M. the Magician several years ago in a used bookstore. I thoroughly enjoyed that book...except that the ending left the reader screaming for a resolution between Mairleon and Kim. Magician's Ward more than fulfills our every question, as well as giving the audience another exciting mystery/adventure through an England that should have been. One or two of my friends have complained that Ms. Wrede did not take the implicit titular pun far enough, but, personally, I'm simply elated that she wrote a sequel at all. A definite read.
Rating: Summary: This is my very favorite! Review: I loved Ms. Wrede's Enchanted Forest Books so as soon as I could I went to library to check it out. They had Mairelon The Magician and Magician's Ward. I loved them both! MtM is soo funny because in the would-be-serious-parts it's hysterical! and the way Kim talks and is always arguaing with Hunch. I like MW best because you actually get to see Kim as a girl and it assures you what happens in the end, that you thought might happen. You have to read it!
Rating: Summary: Not great, not bad, but worth a few hours of your time Review: I haven't read the first, being unable to get a hold of one (the publisher is out of stock), but I'd like to, from this one. The story is a bit slight, but the character of Kim is engaging and you find yourself sympathizing with her efforts to become a magician and not just another English lady. I found the idea of the High Society of England being composed of magicians to be an intriguing one, and one that possibly deserved more development than it got. Then again, perhaps it did in the first book. I also think this series, if continued, could do with a bit more emphasis on the magic itself. How does it work, what kind of spells are there, etc. It was a relief, although somewhat predictable, that Kim and Mairelon got together at the end. Not the greatest I've ever read, but certainly entertaining and worth a few hours of my time.
Rating: Summary: This book was great! Review: I really liked Mairelon the Magician and I thought this book was also really good. Patricia C. Wrede does a good job of portraying the shallowness of Regency England society as opposed to the depth of the characters of Mairelon and Kim. The magic showdown ending was very characteristic of Ms. Wrede, and what happens to Kim at the end satisfies my curiousity of what would happen with her and Mairelon at the end of Mairelon the Magician. In all, a wonderful book! I hope there is a sequel sometime soon.
Rating: Summary: A GREAT followup to Mairelon the Magician Review: I was hesitant to read this book at first because I enjoyed the first one so much and didn't want to ruin my ideas of "what happened next." However, I found this book to be highly enjoyable, a sequel worth waiting for. Written in much the same style as Mairelon the Magician, I again found the characters' personalities to be subtle, NOT underdeveloped. The story has many charming moments and comes to a satisfactory end, living up to my expectations.
Rating: Summary: Blah nothing new Review: Anther trite and stereotypical fantasy book. You're usual bag of tricks and fights, nothing new, nothing fresh, nothing that sparks the mind, this is one story that was easily forgotten and indistinguishable from other typical fantasies I've read. Read the first one, it's more than this one.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: Look people, this is an AWSOME BOOK!!! The characters WERE WELL-DELOPED, and I liked the way Kim tried to become a lady. The 1st one was better in my opinion, but this book was still awsome!
Rating: Summary: An enjoyable, if not great, book. Better than the 1st. Review: I found this book to be fun and enjoyable without being great. First, the drawbacks. Much like the first, most of the characters in this book are not well developed. The supporting characters are all but interchangable, with only their names and badly written accents to distinguish them. Also, not a lot happens in this book; it is not what I would call action-packed. Readers expecting a lot of excitement and action will be disappointed. This is not to say the story is not enjoyable; it focused more on Kim's introduction to society than on magic or action, but it was fun. I like the characters Mairelon and Kim (the only two characters even halfway developed), and their relationship and the way they act together is well done. I liked reading about Kim's reluctant "come-out" to society, and I was always wondering what would happen next. This book was much more focused than the first book, and the cast of interchangable supporting characters was kept mercifully smaller. The story was much more interesting than the first one as well, and while the ending was perhaps a little too convenient, the story was brought to a satisfying conclusion. While not action-packed, the book was fun, and I would probably read another in the series if one was ever written.
Rating: Summary: It's Great! Review: This was an excellent book! I read it even before I read the first one. It's even better that the enchated forest series and Marielon the Magician. I have read it at least a million times so i'm a bit sick of it and waiting for a sequel.
