Rating: Summary: A great read for adults and kids! Review: A wonderful guide to a more thorough understanding of the world of magic and Harry Potter. The Magical World of Harry Potter tells fascinating stories about ancient legends and gives a deeper, richer meaning to J.K. Rowlings famous books. My kids loved it as much as they did the original books and I like being able to answer their questions intelligently about the why, when, where and whos of the magical world. Plus the kids love knowing more than their friends about Harry Potter. A great read.
Rating: Summary: wonderfully revealing Review: It's not hard to see why kids and adults alike are hooked on Harry Potter. He's a "highly unusual boy," and an unwitting hero who proves himself to be that hero. His is a truly inspired story--and it goes much deeper than fantasy. This book reveals the history and mythology that Rowling has worked into the books. As the afterword notes, the best and most imaginative writers are often great readers, and Rowling is indeed a great writer and a great reader. "Magical Worlds" reveals the intricate underpinnings of the captivating world of Harry Potter, and creates a deeper appreciation of the events, characters, and names. I myself have felt more of the terror of You-Know-Who's name after reading in this book what it literally means.
Rating: Summary: The Magical Worlds of Harry Potter: A Treasury of Myths, Leg Review: The Magical Worlds of Harry Potter: A Treasury of Myths, Legends, and Fascinating Facts by David Colbert is book filled with fun facts and other items regarding Harry Potter. I loved it and so will you.
Rating: Summary: A Must-Have For Any Harry Potter Fan! Review: This book is written quite well, and uses a variety of resources to make it a wonderful insght into the magical world we have come to know and love. I like how they make references not only to the books themselves, but also to the myhtology that JK Rowling had to delve into in order to write the books. Very enjoyable!
Rating: Summary: An Easy and Fun Read! Review: This book stayed on the shelf at my bookstore until I finally gave in to temptation and purchased it. I'd have to say that all in all this book was great fun to read. The chapters were short, started with questions, and well written. I have always loved Mythology and found the author's insight refreshing and light. He wasn't trying to convince you he was right or wrong, he was just stating facts and giving insight to little nuances about J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World. What a great way to bridge the gap between book 5 and book 6 of the Harry Potter Series. I will be adding it to my reading list with my kids. We currently are reading a chapter a night of the HP Series and I'll add that at the end. They'll get a kick out of it.
Rating: Summary: Great Day, Great Choice Review: This is an awesome book. Very informational and alot better thn it sounds. I passed it in the store many times and was never interested. Someone gave it to me as a gift, and I decided to try it and it was almost as good as the Harry Potter books! I gives you alot of insight into the wizard/magical world in the books. I love it and reccomend it to any real fan!
Rating: Summary: Best of the Batch Review: All in all, this book is an excellent guide to the allusions and mythologies that flow through the Harry Potter books. However I cannot give this tome 5 stars, because the author misses some critical (and I feel obvious) points. In discussing the death spell 'Avra Kedavra' the author compares it exclusively with the old magician's phrase 'Abra Kadabra', completely missing the similarities between Kedavra and cadaver. Also Colbert says Sirius Black is named after the Dog Star, Sirius; when it seems more likely Sirius Black was named after the legendary hunting dog of Orion (who also gave the star its name). There are a few other similar oversights (and they may be adressed in future additions) that keep this book from being the perfect guide to the world of Harry Potter.
