Summary: Some things, thankfully, stay the same...
Review: Don't dismiss it out of hand simply because the hero-role has been passed on -- in some things, Zelazny has no peer; writing is one of those things. Perhaps the 'new' Amber series doesn't give a sense of closure, but allow for the unfortunate and sudden closure. The skill, the power, and the vision are his. Now and forever.

Summary: Should have stopped at Corwin...
Review: I agree whole-heartedly with the guy from Houston. This book is trash. Nothing against Zelasney, but after the first series the pressure was on for "more Amber, more Amber" and you can tell that he was stretching to give what the public wanted. This series should have never been written, as it leaves a bad taste in your mouth due to the COMPLETELY uninspired and dissappointing outcome of the beloved Corwin and his pattern. Also...Merlin isnt Corwin, and that's that. He just isnt interesting. And Chaos isnt Amber...IT isnt nearly as interesting. Finally...for the die-hard Amber fans that havent read these books...they will just piss you off and rain on the parade that was books 1 through 5. If you havent had the pleasure of reading about Prince Corwin, however...you never know.

Summary: The beginning of another intriguing adventure
Review: I am a huge fan of the Amber series. The characters are well developed and the plot forces you to read on. For anyone who hasn't read the original series that begins with "The Nine Princes of Amber," read them. They are spellbinding literature.

This novel is no different. I sat reading for hours, literally unable to put the book down. Its words carried me to places beyond this reality. However, there is a huge drawback to this book. You will become hooked on a series without a clear resolution. The final book in the "Amber" series, "The Prince of Chaos," fails to tie up some necessary loose ends and leaves you asking questions like, "What happened to Corwin and the new Pattern?" This is a great book and a riveting series. Still I must say, shame on you Roger Zelazny for not giving me the closure I so deperately needed. Your loyal fans deserve more.

Summary: Just not the same as the first Amber series with Corwin.
Review: If you love the first series of Amber books, featuring Prince Corwin, then I personally suggest you skip reading this second series, which is about his son Merlin. Zelazny goes so far away from what he started out with, it just doesn't make any sense at all at the end...even for sci-fi/fantasy! Even if you could ignore the fact that the second series just doesn't follow the same plot lines as the first, there are still just too many unanswered questions at the end of this series. And believe me, if you desire to know what becomes of Corwin or the "new" pattern, you will be greatly disapointed. So, whenever I'm in the mood for a trip to Amber, I pull out the Corwin series. The second series, I threw in the trash.

Summary: merlin is not corwin.......but he's still interesting
Review: of course merlin isn't corwin, thank god, if he was then what would be the point of a "sequel series"? i found this book to be the most interesting of books 6-10 other than the 9th book in the series. granted the "2nd series of the amber chronicles" isn't as inspired or original as books 1-5, but its still way better than most of the other sci-fi/fantasy novels out there! zelazny always seemed to be on top of his form, he never betrayed his style and ceaselessly used "logical" surprises, not contrived surprises, as well as incorporating a sense of humor. the only qualm i have about the book is that its too short!!!

Summary: A Pinnacle of Literary Talent
Review: Roger Zelazny is the best, not just in science fiction but possibly amongst the best in modern literature. The twists and turns of the story are incredible. In this book, and amazingly in each book to follow, just when reality seems to settle down, he flips it upside down and changes it again, tying it into the past with a whole new perspective. Zelazny was a master of picking up the plot, the loose ends and moving onto an incredibly new original, but leaving us dangling with new loose ends to think about. Zelazny never resolves all the unanswered questions and that is part of the charm. Unfortunately, we are all lost, since he died before the series continued. It is such a loss not to see what he would have done next. Son of Merlin? Daughter of Merlin? Unfortunately we will never know, but he has left behind an unparalleled series that blends great prose, adventure, and surprisingly a very wry sense of humor.

Summary: The Best of the Amber Series
Review: Roger Zelazny's generally excellent Amber series reaches its peak with this book, which is rather strange, condsidering that it is the beginning of a new adventure, in which Corwin's son Merlin becomes the protagonist. It's a great book, but loses on point because without having read the previous Amber books, it's next to incomprehensible...

Summary: this is a great book with many superb plot twists

Summary: Exciting!
Review: This is a great and exciting book. Roger Zelazny writes in his great unique style with his incredible imagination. This is science fiction, not written because the public demanded more Amber, and not as a trite scifi for the masses, but rather written with elegance and art for those with the imagination to appreciate it and enjoy it. Each word is like a beautiful image to treasure, if unfortunately a bittersweet one, as it this was his last book. We have lost Roger Zelazny. We have only now his name and his legacy of incredible stories, of which this undoubtedly is one of lingering beauty.
