Rating: Summary: outstanding book, long-time coming - Elizabeth's best. Review: If you liked the 1980's series of Chronicles of Tornor (Watchtower,Dancers of Arun and Northern girl) then this book is a must read. DRAGONS WINTER has plenty of plot twist, and an excellent story line. The hero is not who you expect and once you start reading - this book is hard to put down. Enjoy it - It's worth the time spent reading it.
Rating: Summary: "Good to have her back, but cruel and violent" Review: In her previous books, especially Sardonyx Net, we saw a writer dealing with issues of slavery, power exchange, and physical and psychological cruelty. In Dragon's Winter, the physical cruelty is on the ascendent and seems sometimes more important than character and plot. She is a wonderful writer, and she develops characters and makes you care for them a lot before they are brutally dispatched. I haven't read too many fantasy novels since the late '80's, so maybe the genre has changed and I'm behind the times. This is a really good book, and I look forward to the second one, but I was put off by the violence and cruelty.
Rating: Summary: a welcome return of a favorite author Review: Lizzy Lynn wrote some of the best fantasy books ever in the early and mid 1980s with her Chronicles of Tornor series. Then she took a writing hiatus for more than a decade. Now she has returned, with a tale which shines in its straightforward lyrical prose and its involvement of the reader in its world, making the whole much more than the sum of its parts. DRAGON'S WINTER is the story of two brothers, one destined to rule and the other jealous of his birthright; shapechangers and the people who love them; and the workings of a magical world from cottage hearth to castle towers. A wonderful book, complete in its self but with a rich world I hope Lynn plans to revisit soon.
Rating: Summary: Interesting but violent! Review: The concept of this story is very interesting and keeps you reading to find out what will happen. Unfortunately the story is also filled with an overkill of violence. A good portion of this book is dedicated to introducing characters just so the author can viciously kill them off latter in the book to show how evil the evil characters are.Overall I found the premises behind the story (a dragon changeling) very interesting but, after such a build up, the ending came as a let down.
Rating: Summary: great job Review: the first fantasy story I actually finished. Overall the story is great. There is a lot of tension in the book, and brings out a lot of emotion out of you. You do connect while reading the book, and really get into it. Although I did find the final confrontation was a bit lacking, and somewhat anticlimatic. (or even some of the events leading up to it, I'd just like to see a##kicking from time to time)
Some parts of the story arent as well explored as they shouldve/couldve been, such as certain characters and their inner world, as well as the overall betrayal theme in the story. Overall this book is excellent, but just missing a tad bit of something that I found when reading Belgariad.
Rating: Summary: NOT TOO BAD Review: The whole tenet of this book is that envy doesn't pay, in the end it will eat you up. Twin brothers were born,Karadur with the dragon blood and Tenjiro without. Tenjiro wants what he can't have and turns to evil sorcery to obtain it. Ms. Lynn writes a good fantasy but is a little heavy handed with her violence. I can't really say that the "hero", Karadur the Dragon, is any better than his brother as he mindlessly kills his friends with his dragon anger. The ending is less than fulfilling also.
Rating: Summary: great book! Review: This book had a different form of plot then I'm used to, but it was great. It was extremely well written! I gave it a 4 because i was dissapointed in the end of the story: it was confusing and I think it lasted too long after the main resolution of the plot. Other than that, great book!
Rating: Summary: Great read. Review: This book was an awesome read. I just finished it today, and all day during school, in the car, at home, everywhere I couldn't put it down. It was an excellent book with a lot of detail (And I noticed people didn't like that, but it was great). It had extreme details and it made me realiaze that would probably happen if those things were true, the detail perfect, as if it was real. But I didn't like the part where they killed the best character, but at least they kept a part of him alive as his son. I thought it showed how truely evil someone could be as the parts continued especially when they talked about when they were captured, extremely detailed, and I saw it as if I was in a corner watching it happen, excellent book. Any fantasy readers should read this book!
