Rating: Summary: highly entertaining, very tightly plotted Review: This story is a rousing adventure story of the sort that one might find written by Alexander Pope but with magic and involving the chaotic state of Italy during the time of the condotierre, generals for hire during the Renaissance. One might also compare it to the movie Ladyhawke, but on a much greater scale. The story follows Toby Longdirk and his sidekick Hamish in their efforts to stop the demon-possessed King of England from conquering all of Europe. Along the way, for a change, the spectre of true love and a lady in distress, in the form of Princess Elizabeth of England, appears to complicate things. It gets suitably Macchiavelian toward the end, but I eagerly await further novels. I am not one of these readers who can only handle straightforward storylines. This is not a childrens book, it has too much detail and plot twists to appeal to the Saturday morning cartoon violence crowd.
