Rating: Summary: Praise for The Drag Queen of Elfland from Echo Magazine Review: "The Drag Queen of Elfland is a collection of gay fantasies and fairy tales by the indefatigable Lawrence Schimel. All the stories are original, not retelling of classical fairy tales, and Schimel has attached a brief introduction to each one. The book's cover, which is sure to grab your attention, has a cover by pierre et gilles, whose retrospective book of photos was one of 1997's ten best art books. Schimel weaves sex, magic, and fantasy into this wonderfully gender-diverse set of fables which is sure to capture your imagination and, in a few cases, perhaps your heart." by Ken Furtado for Echo Magazine
Rating: Summary: Combining Two Worlds! Review: Here's a collection of 17 short fantasy stories from an author who knows how to be funny as well as push a lot of buttons to get his points across. He's created a new and exciting kind of gay writing through alternative worlds of the supernatural where individuals, no matter your age, gender or sexual orientation can be free to be whoever they wish to be. "Take Back the Night" about a lesbian bookstore owner was fascinating reading that would make anyone hope they never run into a wolf. I was equally thrilled with the stories; "Fag Hag" and "Coming Out of the Broom Closet". What an imagination Schimel has. This is a collection of fantasy stories that should not be missed, written by a young author who seems to have a talent for tackling difficult subjects and making them light but fascinating reading for all of us. Rating: Summary: *smirk* Review: I laughed, I cried, I got vaguely grossed out about horse racing, and I loaned it to my best friend, who also loved it. Not a bad story in here, and certainly wouldn't offend most anyone...well, except the prudes. Who wouldn't read this anyway. So, in conclusion, buy this book! It's a fun little read.
Rating: Summary: Fantasy with a splendidly modern sensibility Review: Lawrence Schimel's short stories address the fantasy genre from a perspective firmly rooted in contemporary queer society with results that are both delightful and poignant. He manages to pack more emotional resonance into his stories (the longest of which are just over a dozen pages) than many writers manage to get into entire novels.
