Review: Among librarians, a select few reference works are known instantly by the last name of the compiler. In comic book bibliography, the name is Overstreet; in science fiction, such names include Baron, Bleiler, Brown, Contento, Nicholls, and Tymn. With this reference guide, absolutely essential for all libraries supporting programs at any level in SF or popular culture, Burgess bids strongly to join that select group. The scope of this guide is remarkable. Included with extensive annotations are sequences on encyclopedias and dictionaries; atlases and gazetteers, yearbooks, annuals and almanacs, awards lists, readers' and critical guides; magazine and anthology indexes; character dictionaries; price guides; and bibliographies general, national, subject, publisher, artist, and author. The section on individual authors is highly inclusive and the annotations crisp and informative. Future and existing programs in speculative literature studies will need to review their reference and bibliography holdings by consulting Burgess. The indexing is excellent. Highly Recommended.
