Rating: Summary: Asprin is really starting to hate this series... Review: ...and it is starting to show. The last few books in the series, starting with Number 7 (M.Y.T.H Inc. Link) have taken a real down turn in quality. They haven't been very funny, or very exciting, or very anything. Just 200 pages or so Skeeve learning life lessons. And they've finally hit absolute rock bottom with this stinker.
What happens here? Well, Skeeve starts dating and realizes he has a drinking problem. There. I've saved you $5. No magical adventures, no outrageously bad puns, even the fake quotes at the start of each chapter are laboured. What is also upsetting is Asprin's entire attitude. When the last one came out (M.Y.T.H. Inc. In Action) there was a forward from Asprin apologizing for how late this was, cursing his writer's block, promising a new episode in a year, etc. etc. That was 1990. Four years later, during which time Asprin wrote many Phule's novels, this half-hearted effort came out. Bleah. It reeks of afterthough and contractual obligations. And there's not even an apologetic forward from the author.
Did anyone read Sharon McCrumb's very funny book "Bimbos of the Death Sun?" It's a murder mystery set at a SF convention. The murder victim is an unpleasant character who has been made famous by a serious of Conan style adventures. However the author hates his creation with a passion, feeling resentful that such a vulgar, base, piece of hackwork is why he is a success. I sense the same attitude from Robert Asprin toward his Mythic creations. He just doesn't seem to care. It's interesting to note that the only time this dreary book comes to life is in the last couple of pages, where the peasants of Klah start to rise up against the perceived tyrannies of the Great Skeeve. Personal allegory, anyone?
Asprin should spare us all from any further nonsense like this if he can't be bothered to write a decent book. You won't miss it when it's gone, which may be his master plan. Alienate his fans so they stop bugging him to write more stories
Rating: Summary: utterly great Review: another brilliant book by Asprin ... for all ages ..wizards, demons, dragons and tax collectors... cannot wait for the next one.. Skeeve and his Dragon Master Gleep....get their own back i hope ....but all i can do is wait...
Rating: Summary: Talk about MYTHING Somethink? Review: enough, is enough, is enough, is enough. Sure, we all enjoyed this series growing up. If any of you started this series as an adult and read more than 2 or 3 of these joke guides to adolescent behavior and mayhem, you should be riding the 'short bus to school' again. Of course Asprin has outgrown these characters and thin story lines...you would too after TEN BOOKS with the same characters. I truly beleive it is time for Mr. Asprin to move on to a whole new series or even style. That's it, just wipe the board and start from scratch. I think the author provides interesting insite on all of our daily issues, but he's said his piece with these characters. Maybe it's time for Robert to put down the bottle and try some EXERCISE. You know, get in shape or at least step away from the word processor for a time. He needs inspiration and thus get back to the original, humorous, delightful author we've all grown to love. If you'd like to help Robert, don't buy one more MYTH anything novel. He's obviously done with it, you should be too.
Rating: Summary: Could Use Work Review: Even though I've read many of the comments on the most recent book. (Sweet Myth-tery Of Life) I still believe that overall it was an interesting book. I had to realize that our Skeeve was going to grow up sometime. Even though I was disappointed on how he left so many loose ends. Like how is his relationship with Bunny going to end up, and WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TO GLEEP!!? Those are just some of the many questions that should be answered in the next book ( Something M.Y.T.H. Inc.) WHich by the way has anyone heard about? Anyway, even though it was not my fav. by a long shot, it was still good reading:-)
Rating: Summary: Only half a book. Review: First off, I LOVE the MYTH series. Every single one of them is intelligently written and quite hillarious. Until now.
This book is incomplete. There are obvious references to events taking place, which are apparently covered in Something M.Y.T.H-Inc, that are never explained here. Similar to how M.Y.T.H.-Inc in Action and Myth-Nomers and Im-Perv-ections both covered the same time frame, but from the perspective of different people. The difference there being, each book was complete. M.Y.T.H.-Inc in Action covered Guido's and Nunzio's adventures in the army on Klah, and Myth-Nomers and Im-Perv-ections covered Skeeve's adventures on Perv. Completely different dimensions, so there was no overlapping of events.
Here, however, there are obvious gaps. Why the townspeople are rising up against Skeeve isn't fully explained, Gleep is almost entirely ignored (although we are told repeatedly that SOMETHING important is happening with him/it), Pookie shoots Guido, and that's pretty much all we're told about THAT incident.
There IS one rather funny scene in which Skeeve completely fails to grasp the concept of a blind date (Vic: "What would you say to a blind date?" Skeeve: "Well . . . the same thing I'd say to a date that could see, I imagine."), but on the whole the book is not nearly as funny as the rest of the series. Although it is still intelligently written, it revolves mostly around the subject of marriage, and why they go bad (The conversation with Chumley, for example, was quite interesting, providing a unique take on marriage's pitfalls).
Overall, I'd say that this book is not worth recommending (especially with the INCREDIBLY weak ending), although all of the earlier books are. Perhaps combining this book with Something M.Y.T.H.-Inc (quite an appropriate title, wot?) will produce one solid book, worth the price of admission. It's a good thing my favorite color is blue (because I'll be holding my breath).
Rating: Summary: Not _THAT_ bad! Review: Hey! this book wasn't that bad! Sure it kinda read like a soap opera... but haven't you read the other books? They're all like that! This book is merely everything coming to a head!
I enjoyed it!
True, don't start with this one... but you never start with the last books in a series, anyway. duh.
SO. this book was good, but only if you want to know what is going on to the people you have fallen in love with throughout the series. If you want slapstick? try the stooges. The humour is there, but this book is pure continuity.
BTW:I personally am voting for the trollop over the moll! (Though I like Bunny!) and WHAT'S HAPPENED TO GLEEP?!?!?!
Rating: Summary: my two cents Review: i grew up reading the myth series. it gave me so much that i can't say thank you enough to robert asprin. that's why when i read this book, as an adult and not a child, i was a little more understanding. the man's had writer's block and it looks like a ton of projects (some of them very familiar to one another e.i. phule's and myth series) going on all at once. the first 4 or 5 of the myth books are great candy for the mind. and to come this far with anything like a book series is incredible. everyone wanted to skeeve get involved and get married or stay a swinging single. it was something that needed to evolve over a period of time and not get rushed into. he took a long break then came out with this last book. and it just sucked. as much as i love robert asprin's imagination, this last book was bad. but i won't stop reading any further books and i'll never give up on asprin though he's become an author of my childhood like anthony. i and every asprin fan should stand behind him until he says he is finished, no matter what.
Rating: Summary: Where is the next one? Review: I have been an loyal fan of Mr. Asprin for as long as i can recall and this was one of my most anticipated novels. Although it did not live to the expectations, it was still a solid read. Three years later and still awaiting the next book i'm puzzled as to why Mr. Asprin would include the first chapter of a book he may never finish, must like Anne Rice's Mummy series. If there is anybody out there that has any idea regarding the next book in this series, i would gladly like to receive some information.
Rating: Summary: Great Book! But I want MORE! Review: I have read all of the myth books and this one was good, not great, just good.. But as always it will leave you wondering when on earth will the next one be released
Rating: Summary: Good Book, waiting for next one. Review: I have read this book and it is great. Skeeve's problem with the Queen and the advice he gets makes it a good book to read. I wonder when the next one is coming out.
