Rating: Summary: Great adventure thriller. Review: Becker is to be highly commended for his fast-paced writing, and research that makes you wonder. Can't believe the reviewer from Tuscalosa entered into a scientific debate with the fictional hero, Jack. The reviewer sounds like those in the scientific establishment that Jack battled throughout his career. Now that's a convincing novel! I agree with commentator Paul Harvey's critique of Link - "recommended reading for anybody who enjoys intellectual calisthenics."
Rating: Summary: Indiana Jones meets the X-Files Review: I REALLY enjoyed this book! Too many stories about archeology tend to be too technical and, as a result, boring. Mr. Becker's use of scientific terminology and theory was believable and entertaining. Despite reading like a screenplay (It IS what the man does, afterall.) and being a little short, it was a terrific first novel! I would highly recommend it to anyone who wishes to curl up in front of a fireplace with a good book this holiday season.
Rating: Summary: Poorly written, error filled, creationism soapbox. Review: This story is barely more than a vehicle for peddling creationism. The beginning is promising and you may forgive the odd technical error. But as you get deeper into the story you find the errors mounting and you realize the author is not remotely technically inclined. Readers who like hard science fiction will not like this book. Think of it as a bad James Bond movie but without as complex a plot, not as technically accurate, and not as well written. If the author had left out the dogma and had the story reviewed at least once for errors it could have risen to mediocre. Only those who are deaf to the fingernails-on-a-chalkboard errors or want confirmation of their beliefs will like this story.
Rating: Summary: Good Adventure Novel Review: I enjoyed this book as an adventure novel. I would like to see a sequal. What will happen when the scientists reveal their find to the world? How will political leaders and religious leaders react? Will they try to surpress revealing these findings to the general public? How will the public react?
Rating: Summary: This book will change your thinking on the origins of man Review: A completely entertaining book from cover to cover. Although the plot itself reads somewhat like a screenplay, the content is superb. Walt Becker has put in a tremendous amount of research that will leave everyone questioning their ideas on the origins of the human race. The plot itself reads like many Michael Crichton novels, and like his books, will surely be made into a major motion picture. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: cliche-ridden disappointment Review: I wanted to like this adventure story blending paleoanthropology and UFOlogy, but the characters are two-dimensional at best and the plot is also stock fare. The frequent asides, in which the author presents less-than-compelling attacks on Darwinism and advances various speculative theories about human origins, might have been more interesting if they were not presented in the context of such a bland story. Likely to be a hit with people who loved the Celestine Prophecy.
Rating: Summary: A total misrepresentation of evolution and thermodynamics Review: I am completely willing to "suspend my disbelief" in a work of fiction such as "Link". However, when a work of fiction purports to be based on scientific research but instead is a repeated misrepresentation of basic science fact, then my disbelief cannot be suspended. Mr. Becker's character,Jack, spouts creationist nonsense and misrepresents evolutionary theory (including: no transitional fossils have ever been found and the presence of modern crocodiles refutes evolution) over and over again. Jack has no inkling of the second law of thermodynamics (he seems to think that life itself breaks the second law). The second law of thermodynamics applies only when there is no external energy source in a closed system but in the case of our earth we have a large external energy source: our Sun. There are also just some laughable boo-boos which should have been picked up during editing such as when a man shot in the neck dies clutching his "aorta". I cannot recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic reading with a unique plot! Review: This is a MUST READ book! My wife read 15 hours straight, stopping just for dinner, because she just couldn't put it down or sleep until she finished. "Link" kept her entranced until 3:30 AM. WOW! I' ve read it too, and I was mesmerized not only with the characters, but also with the great extensive research interwoven with the story. Great bibliography and brilliant writing!
Rating: Summary: Unfair comment from NY!!!!! Review: Re the comment from the New York reader dated October 21, 1998: How unfairly critical & untrue! LINK is a fascinating journey! Sure, a few passages are slow but this tale is original, enthralling and involves the reader all the way to the surprising conclusion. I hope the stereotype of New Yorkers' cynicism is not reinforced by the reader who slammed LINK because he/she is flat wrong: LINK is a fine adventure!
Rating: Summary: Exciting Adventure Thriller Review: This is a non-stop, can't wait to see what's going to happen next, adventure thriller. A throughly enjoyable read that informs as well as entertains. I'll read it a second time to appreciate the history and scientific background that gives the story its credibility. Great fun!
