Summary: Superb and engrossing
Review: The fugitive prince is an excellent peice of work. The only other writers I know of that can produce such work are Robin Hobb and Chris Bunch. To often writers create a story in which one side is completely good and the other absolutely evil. In this series we are faced with two major opposing forces, the two princes. And it will be extremely unfair to classify the prince at fault as evil. This is a compelling sequel and Wurts is worthy of the highest accolade.

Summary: Look for this book by Janny Wurts to be a bestseller!!
Review: The Wars of Light and Shadow series, by Janny Wurts, begun with Curse of the Mistwraith, and continued with Ships of Merior and Warhost of Vastmark, is an excellent series, combining the best elements of fantasy into a sweeping saga of epic scope. Two princes, one, Master of Shadow, the other, Prince of Light, are set at odds by the curse of the Mistwraith, a being set upon destroying all life in their world of Athera. The curse draws the whole world into their horrible conflict. Fugitive Prince is the next installment in this gripping series. If this book is as well-written as Janny Wurt's previous novels, Fugitive Prince will be a page-turner not soon forgotten. Look for this book sometime during late summer/early fall of 1997. Summary: Great story line, but really slow start.
Review: This series has been compelling reading from the outset. Fugitive Prince however lacks the smooth start of the previous novels. Had this been the first book in the series I tried to read, the rest of the series would probably have been ignored because it seems to take forever (well over half the book) before the story really gets moving. The good news is the last half of the book reads smoothly, swiftly and entertainingly. Hopefully, the next installment will have the same swift start and easy flow as the prior novels. Looking forward to October.

Summary: I LOVE IT!!!
Review: This series ROCKS! Read it now if you are a fantasy fan. Better than everything that anyone else can throw at it!

Summary: Very nearly the worst ever
Review: While Wurts has never been (and never will be) known as a prose stylist, this book is not just badly written, but spectacularly awful.

Her previous successes have evidently given her, her agent, and/or her publisher the delusion that she no longer needs an editor. This is not the case; although it's clear that she stands more in need of a coauthor than an editor.

As William Atheling (James Blish) would have said, had he been unfortunate enough to live to see it, an entire course on how not to write could be built on this novel's hapless corpse.

Suffice it to say that if you have any love of language, you will find this book unendurable.

Of course, since you're on the Web reading this, you're probably a Wurts fan and will therefore swallow all of her infelicities uncritically, if not enthusiastically.

The acknowledgements make arch mention of the hundreds of trees sacrificed to make this book; Wurts owes each and every one of them an abject apology.

Summary: Awaiting breathlessly for the next one...
Review: With Fugitive Prince, Janny takes us to new and dizzying heights of emotion. While not up to Tolkein's level, she shines brighter and surer in the SF/Fantasy firmament. Then again, Tolkein is in a class by himself and thus, unfair to compare anyone to him. Suffice it to say, Janny's talent and style continue to broaden. My only gripe is this: WHY CAN'T YOU WRITE FASTER JANNY??? :^) And if you read this, do you need a proof reader? I can devour Ships of Merior in a week, so I'd be a fast, though accurate proof reader. Keep it coming!
