Rating: Summary: At times terrifying, chilling, despairing, ever fascinating Review: At the outset, I should state that I am not a fan of horror fiction (aside from most of Dean Koontz's works). While I can tolerate blood and gore quite well, religious horror seems to strike a primal fear in me. Ten seconds of the head turning scene from "The Exorcist" was too much for me to stomach. Although I love Ah-nold movies, I passed on "End of Days."So you can understand why I approached "Millennium Rising" with some trepidation. I bought it because it had been described as "The X-Files" crossed with "Millennium." I'm happy to report that Jane Jensen did a fabulous job of bringing me to brink of that primal fear without crossing the line. That's not to say that the book is not terrifying at times, because it is, and there are sequences that really do evoke the feeling of the end of the world. As other reviewers have noted, there is a key revelation (so to speak) about halfway through the novel, but that hardly means you understand everything. Rather, the puzzlement shifts to a different level. The only negative I have to say is that the ending seemed a little forced. Not unbelievable; it works within the framework of the book. But it felt truncated. Another short chapter would have been good. (I think this is because when you have been writing about the Apocalypse, you need more than a few pages to end your story.)
Rating: Summary: A must-read for this millennium and beyond! Review: By far the best millennium-themed book I have read. The story is enthralling, the characters draw you in, and I could not put it down. I found the main characters, Vatican investigator Father Deauchez and NY Times reporter Simon Hill to be very engaging, yet humanly flawed and believable. The entire cast of characters is incredibly interesting, and the plot never flags. The problem with many thrillers and other genre books is the struggle against feeling "that would NEVER happen," or "she would NEVER do that!" Millennium Rising is blissfully free of those kind of moments. There are no mis-steps. It is believable and terrifying at the same time (this from a true skeptic). You do not have to be a world destruction/conspiracy fan to enjoy this book. This intelligent and thoughtful thrill ride will be appreciated by readers of all types of fiction (and non-fiction). Beware, from the first page to the satisfying ending, you won't be able to do much else BUT read this book!
Rating: Summary: Well plotted conspiracy end-times story. Review: Do you like plots regarding world conspiracies? Do you like stories about end-time prophecies? Do you enjoy the idea that institutions such as the Vatican, the United States government, etc. are the holders of unbelievable secrets that could possibly restructure the world as we know it? Well, then you might really be able to get into this book. Personally, I really enjoyed it. The plot was well-paced and it kept you wanting to read more. I will say that the end of the book was just a little too contrived for me and even too simplistic for the complex plot that had been driven to up to that point. That was a bit of an anti-climax for me. In fact, that is the only reason I could not give the book a full five stars. Even with that, however, I heartily recommend the book. For the most part it is a non-stop roller coaster as you try to figure out, along with the protagonists, just what the heck (or is that Hell?) is going on. For those who might fear that this is just a lot of religious battling between the forces of light and darkness (a la "The Stand") with highly moralistic overtones, you will be in for a pleasant surprise as to the twists and turns of the story. On the other hand, for those hoping that this is a titanic battle between some (insert your God here) and (insert your God's nemesis here), a la "This Present Darkness," you may not find this one to your liking.
Rating: Summary: Now I know why Bush attacked Iraq Review: Ever wondered why Bush got rid of Sadaam? Well if you read this book it says that next anti-Christ predicted by Nostradumus was to be located in Baghdad, Iraq. Don't know if this factually correct, but that's what the book said on a certain page. But one thing to be factually correct is Bush has now pledged $130 billion to the rebuilding of Iraq as of today. Now I can sympathise with Bush on attacking Iraq. Well done! Otherwise a fantastic book, very X Files.
Rating: Summary: A thinking book... Review: For the most part, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. There was a good bit of action and/or suspense throughout most of the book. When the action/suspense started -- which was early in the book, it kept going. There were a number of different characters -- each with their own issues, but to the author's credit, they were easy to keep track of. In addition, I appreciated the fact that the characters were not one dimensional nor all of the same race. That tended to add a little spice to the book because you're looking at things from their perspectives. The "detective" work carried out by some of the characters was interesting both in what they discovered and the sense of danger they were in as they carried out their activities. The descriptions of events were good enough to allow you "see" what was happening and wonder what in the heck you'd do under the same circumstances. The religious aspects of the book will have you taking a look at where you stand in life. The book didn't rank 5 stars simply because the end of the book tended to drag a little and sound a tad preachy. But in sum, this was a pretty good read.
Rating: Summary: Must read Review: Frankly, this book was a complete surprise. It's not that I expected it to be bad, but it completely surpassed my expectations. It's been a long while since I've read a book this good, and believe me, I read a lot of books. You owe it to yourself to check it out, I promise you won't be disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Millennium Rising High Review: I am an Ayn Rand fan and this book matched anything she has written. It had all the ingredients of a thriller - bad guys, good guys, satanic plots, international intrigue, fanatics trying to control the world. Like the author, I grew up with a fundamentalist background and was surprised at the accuracy of the religious references. Makes me want to go back and look at the book of Revelations - well maybe not, its too scary! It is hard to believe this is Jane Jensen's first novel. I look forward to seeing more of her work and following what I am sure will be a successful literary career. ONE IS NOT ENOUGH.
Rating: Summary: Slightly biased, but I loved this book. Review: I am slightly biased in the matter as I have been a fan of Jensen for some time. I was very impressed with this book. It was a good thriller. It was good Sci-fi. It was also a Jensen story which meant that was just the beginning. Jane knows how to tell a story. It had been a long time since I had gotten so involved in a story that I was really scared. Most of the time I could not put this book down. There were however several instances where I dropped it and had to pace around the room to calm myself down before I could continue reading it. I could not not finish the book though. Read this book, you won't regret it. Please keep writing, Jane. I look forward to your work.
Rating: Summary: Want more like it. Review: I could not put this book down. It had science fiction, religion, who done it,... Great book. Hope Jane Jensen does another one.
Rating: Summary: Millennium Rising Review: I found the book exciting and thought provoking. Could hardly wait to get back to it every time I was forced to put it down (work does get in the way of reading). If you like thrillers with an X-file twist buy it.
