Rating: Summary: Joyous entertainment Review: This is possibly the most exciting book I read. It is certainly NOT the deepest, the most human, nor the funniest. But as far as fantasy goes, this is unsurpassed. I find it odd that people rate this as bad writing; Howard managed to mix high fantasy and warrior spirit with character development. A bad writer can't do that without messing the story flow. Besides, you have to take into account Howard's originality. He was as much a world builder as Tolkien, and where the later had incredible creativity, Howard has impact and agility in his writing. His descriptions are never cluttered, as are Tolkien's. One can visualize the places and action easily, which suits our image-oriented times just fine. The main reason I give it 5 stars is that this is one of those books you just can't stop reading, once you start. Also, it leaves you mouthwatering after you finish it. Sure, it's not the stuff you'd show the average literature teacher. But, as I said earlier, it's amazing entertainment.
Rating: Summary: Howard at his best... accept no substitutes Review: While Conan is R.E. Howard's most famous creation, I've always enjoyed the stories of Kull a great deal more. The brooding man of honor at the helm of a decadant nation has always held more fascination for me than the hack-and-slash adventures of Conan. If you like fantasy and/or pulp fiction, you MUST read this book! Don't let the awful movie from a couple of years color your impressions of what these stories are. You'll find some echoes of them on the screen, but their true power can only be found in this anthology, the only place that I know where all Howard's Kull tales have been collected.
