Summary: The jewel in the Wyndham oeuvre
Review: For those readers who find the science fiction genre off-putting, this novel may convince them that some practioners are possessed with wit, charm and the human touch. The only great shame is that so many of his other books are unavailable to American readers. If you travel to England (or have friends there) be sure to read "Chocky" (a story of a little boy who has a woman who lives in his head), "Consider her ways and others" (novella that I believe Margaret Atwood owes more than a debt to in her futuristic novel) and "The Midwich Cuckoos" (bastardized in the film versions of "Village of the Damned".

Summary: Fantastic book
Review: Arguably the best book I've read this year. It's engrossing, captivating and subtly reveals to its readers the many flaws in society: its bigotry, prejudice and inhumanity. This book deals a lot with what it means to be human. How we are all imperfect yet we fail to see the log in our own eye and never hesitate to criticise the splinter in the eye of our brother. The Chrysalids explores issues such as religion and prejudice, and how wrong it is to only focus on one part of a philosophy (such as the Bible) and ignore other relevant parts as well.

Wyndha, writes in a lyrical manner, with simple language which manages to evoke subtle but lasting emotions and impressions in the hearts of the readers. Indeed, it was a joy to read. By far the best book Wyndham has writte, far surpasses even 'The Day Of The Triffids'. A must-read for those of all ages.

Summary: timeless science fiction masterpiece.
Review: I first read this book in my early teens (1960s) and was enthralled. I re-read it recently and was impressed by how well it had stood the test of time. I consider it Wyndham's best and the book is in my top 5 science fiction books. The story starts (apparently) at an unspecified time in a simple Godfearing agricultural community. Only gradually does it emerge that this is a post-nuclear holocaust society in a remote part of Canada struggling to survive against mutations caused by long-lived nuclear contamination - a concept this simple society has no knowledge of. David, the young hero of the story, learns he and a few other youngsters, have the gift of telepathy. This 'gift' marks them out as 'different' and in this society being different is dangerous. David learns that the quotation on the kitchen wall "cursed is the mutant in the sight of God" applies to him. The story continues from there ( don't want to spoil it for you). From an historical persp! ective this book is interesting - written in the 1950s, it reflects the pervasiveness of concern in society at the time of the consequences of nuclear war - mutually assured destruction. In summary a gripping and thought provoking story, a sci-fi masterpiece. Even my 15 yr old son enjoyed it (read under duress) although the post nuclear war angle did not dawn on him until well into the book.

Summary: BORING!!!
Review: As if anyone could give this book a good review. Did the author write all of the reviews, or something? What a bore! Of all the books I have ever read, this is the absolute worst. It lacks the quality of keeping the attention of the reader. I bet even English lecturers would not know at the end of the book what it was about, because they would have been 3/4 asleep the whole time. Yeah, great, some kids can communicate using there heads. Well, how very exciting!!!

Summary: This book was hard to put down once you got into it.
Review: This is not a review but it tells how I was introduced to this book. In public school grade 5, our teacher liked to read to us from one of his own books that he brought to school. This and one other stand out in my mind some 45 years later. The other book was Cue for Treason. We were transfixed as he read only 1 chapter each day and only on the condition that we were on our best behaviour. He was also our music man and I found out recently that he has had a jazz band for some years now. Since I found him again I have purchased a hard cover copy of the Chrysalids and with a little note that said " I think of you sitting on an empty desk as you read to us and the sigh when you finished and closed the book for the day."

Summary: THe book was excellent
Review: After my grade 11 english teacher assigned this book as a project i though It was going to suck... The first chapter or so was hard to get into but then the story picked up....... The end was a bit cut short and I wish it had gone on a lot longer than 200 pages other than that it was one of the best books I've ever read.. Could put it down for more than 5 min

Summary: Wyndham: a one-of-a-kind sci-fi writer
Review: I must admit I only read this book and "The day of the Triffids" (maybe more at the time you read this!) but from that experience I wouldn't hesitate in calling the author a true artist. It's really amazing how can he create a catchy story and at the same time deal with very deep problems regarding human values and behavior. I could go on talking about it, but I think an excellent summary would be saying that when reading Wyndham's books , one can experiment very powerful -and sometimes subtle- feelings. And I think that's basically the aim a work of art should have.
I'm looking forward to receiving any biographical information about John Wyndham.

Summary: If you only read one book this year let it be this one!
Review: I have never read a more imaginative, vivid novel. It is a tale that forces us to look at family, friends, religion, and love in a different light and is a thrilling prophecy. It's hard to put down and is well written. The characters are well developed and it's easy to become a part of the world in "The Chrysalids" My greatest compliments to the author.
