Rating: Summary: An Interesting Read Review: When I first recieved this novel from my wonderful English 10C teacher, Ms. Fleck, I thought that I would dislike the novel. As I read on, I found myself thouroghly enjoying myself. I would recomend this book to anyone and everyone
Rating: Summary: Very frightening and plausible Review: This book I was forced to read for a language project in my grade 10 english class. In the beginning it was a little boring, but as I went along, it became more engrossing and frightening. This story could actually happen. It drew me in, and now I am sorry to say I read it, because I will never get to read it for the first time again. Too bad nothing else was written after it that followed up on the story.
Rating: Summary: Mankind Condensed to 200 pages Review: It's Incredible. John Wyndham so eleganlty covers some of the most important issues not only in his time (cold war ) but those from the past and present. From Biblical times through medieval times this book has it all
Rating: Summary: This book is the best science fiction I've ever read. Review: I first read this book 12 years ago as part of my Grade 10 English course. I absolutely loved it. About 5 years ago I noticed a copy at the library and re-read it. I still loved it. Two years ago I finally bought the book. I read it about 3 times a year. Everytime I do, I discover details that I missed earlier. I still love this book. It is without a doubt the best science fiction novel around.
Rating: Summary: A book with a lot of details and actions. Review: This book is packed with actions and surprises. This book shows how thoughtful John Wyndham is.
Rating: Summary: Fascinating and horrifying Review: The Chrysalids is a very horrifying and at the same time a very fascinating science-fiction novel. I liked the book very much because of John Wyndham's very special sense of humour, his wonderful style of describing the everyday life in a completely different world and the incredible readability of this book. Even though the story is set in a sort of post-apocalyptic world it is easy to believe that something could happen in todays world.
Rating: Summary: Pretty good for Science Fiction! Review: I read this book in grade six and upon having to do a project now in my fifth year university, I have reread it. As a prospective teacher (and one who found science fiction boring as a student) I think this book is great! It has moral lessons to it and explores issues of our world today and where we are heading. It can be used across the curriculum. Also, flying ships and genetics can be applied to science. I have to agree that the woman at the end was slightly "stereotypical" blonde hair...pale face, etc. But I enjoyed the book overall. As a child, I remember finding the vocabulary difficult, so junior high might be more appropriate. That or good vocabulary exercises!
Rating: Summary: Lily aged 9 Scary but fantastic Review: I didn't like this book at first but it got more and more exciting and I began to think about it all day even when I wasn't reading. One of the best books I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: A fine study of man and his prejudices. Review: Wyndham's novel studies the human condition quite adroitly. We see how prejudice can be exhibited by all, depending on condition. Unfortunately, some of the moral lessons fall apart towards the end of the novel. We are treated to a "superior acting" woman who is supposedly a hero of the story. This weakens Wyndham's general purpose. A good read overall.
Rating: Summary: A book with hope for the outsider Review: This masterpiece of Sci-Fi, post apocalyptic fiction is a damning indictment of prejudice and a reminder of hope for the "outsider." It is a perfect novel for Jr. High students -- especially in this neo-conservsative era. I encourage teachers to read it. I had to buy it in Scottland, so thank Heaven for Amazon.com!
